Esmé Delphine - thoughts?

Hi,

My little one is due in December and she’ll be the youngest of 4 girls. We’re a bit stuck on a name, but I’m loving Esmé at the moment. I have French ancestry so it fits.

My nanna passed away this year and I’d love to honour her by using her name as the middle name, hence Delphine.

Other first names we like are:

Romy
Maeve
Alba

But particular drawn to Esmé. Honest opinions please and open to ideas :-)

It's lovely but I do think esmée is a bit meh and becoming like other French names that are so mixed in British culture, they're no longer seen as French, like Danielle.

You're setting her up for a lifetime of her name being spelt incorrectly. One E or two and the é will never be used apart from by a select few - speaking from experience.

Delphine is lovely and I'd say rare. Unfortunately/fortunately I'm out of favour with the porn industry so never heard of Belle Delphine so I wouldn't pay that too much mind as I'm sure she will be long gone by the time your DD is the age where it would become a problem.

What about anazarde? I spoke with a French lady recently and fell in love with the name. Not close to your suggestions but thought I would bring it up.

Esme Delphine is a beautiful name

happylittlesoul · 03/10/2022 09:10

@Ihavehadenoughalready ooh that’s unique, how is Zelie pronounced? :-)

@FeralWitch I definitely love it but more so as a middle name, just so that DD can have her very own name/identity as well as honouring my nanna :-)

@StupidSmallFruit haha I don’t mind either pronunciation, but I do feel that Esmée would be pronounced ‘ee’ by default by a lot of people, hence why we’re considering the Esmé spelling to. My preference is the same as yours!

In French it would be Esmée.

I personally would avoid the name if French is your aim because the only spellings which are used in the UK are grammatically incorrect in French.

Delphine is lovely and I would use that as a first name.

happylittlesoul · 03/10/2022 09:20

@HappyStripper I don’t have a huge issue with this association as I think it’s something that would only affect certain other parents, and not everyone will have heard of her.

Also society is very accepting nowadays, I would hope DD wouldn’t be judged based on a past sex worker’s stage name!

I think because Delphine is meaningful to me it’s not such a huge issue. Thank you for your opinion :-)

I would used Delphine first too - beautiful! Few Esmes here seem to be shortened to Ez which I don't love. Juliette is a very beautiful French name that sits very well on a lovely friend of ds.

happylittlesoul · 03/10/2022 09:25

@KendrickLamaze thank you, and wow! Anazarde is definitely unique - how did she pronounce her name?

My first name is actually the same with spelling errors haha, there are a few variations and people tend to default to different versions of it.

Personally I don’t mind the Belle Delphine association because I don’t think many will have heard of her. But I will ask DH what he thinks.

Yes @babyjellyfish, we are torn on how to spell it, we’re based in the UK and only have a few relatives left in France now.

Thank you :-)

@MrsEricBana when I hear Ez I think of Ezra! Thank you, a few suggestions of using it as her first name now. I just wonder if she would prefer her own name, as nanna was such a character she’s always going to be talked about!

Juliette is my name :-)

I am also currently trying to choose a bilingual girl's name and got really stuck into all the data about which names cross over between French and British culture.

I have a spreadsheet and everything. 😅

Ah well you have a very lovely name!
We were going to call dd after dh's grandmother who was a wonderful woman. Decided no BUT dd says now that she would have loved to have been named after such a great woman.

KendrickLamaze · 03/10/2022 09:43

I was hoping there would be a YouTube video I could share but the best way to spell it out is Anna-zar-(that throaty sound French people make)-deh or in English as if you were telling people Anna is hard - "Anna's 'ard"

Hope that makes sense.

Anazarde Omar is miss South Africa 🇿🇦

clpsmum · 03/10/2022 10:25

I love it so elegant

Ihavehadenoughalready · 03/10/2022 11:22

Zelie properly French would be Zélie pronounced Zay-lee but it could also be Zell-ie, rhymes with Kelly.

OceanbreezeSun · 03/10/2022 11:40

I think the name Delphine is gorgeous op.

I like Mauve a lot too, but Romy flows better with Delphine.

I’m not keen on Esmee personally, sorry, but it does go well with Delphine.

I’ve also never heard of Belle Delphine, I think that’s a non issue. You could literally associate lots of names with other people/things if you thought about it, just look at the other name threads on here, people saying ‘nice name but it’s the name of my neighbours sisters dog’ If all thought like that, we wouldn’t have any ‘suitable’ names left!

soulinablackberrypie · 06/10/2022 21:47

Of all the names you like, I think Esmée goes best with Delphine, closely followed by Romy. The other two seem to me to need a different length or shape of middle name.

Gisel(l)e is another name with French origins I rather like, which has always gone together with Delphine in my mind (I used to work with a Gisele and accidentally called her Delphine once or twice at first).

Daisybuttercup12345 · 07/10/2022 00:04

Esmae is better.
Elaine. French for Helen.

Billylilly · 07/10/2022 10:00

I love Esme Delphine

RedRec · 07/10/2022 10:04

Absolutely beautiful together like that.

ofwarren · 07/10/2022 10:20

A really lovely sounding name

GoodShipLollipopBop · 07/10/2022 10:22

I love it! It's not often I come across a name on here I love (most are dreadful), but this one is lovely OP. Sounds very sophisticated!
