Barnaby or Sebastian?

LittleMrsMama · 01/10/2022 22:09

DS arriving next month, I quite like Barnaby with nn Barnes or Bee (Barney reminds me a little of a dog name), and DH likes Sebastian with nn Seb, Bas or Bastian.

Our surname begins with a B and we quite like the alliteration too.

Honest thoughts please! or any other similar-ish names?

Sebastian.

Not against alliteration but Barnaby with a B surname is a bit much.

littlemisslozza · 01/10/2022 22:12

Sebastian nn Seb is cool. All Barnaby's I know are Barney, which I find a bit wet to be honest.

Beginningless · 01/10/2022 22:14

Sebastian for me, love that. Full Barnaby let alone Barney, still sounds like a dog or teddy name, to me.

Meredusoleil · 01/10/2022 22:15

Sebastian definitely!

Or how about Theodore or Dominic as alternatives?

Or Benjamin if you want alliteration?

Jazzydrops · 01/10/2022 22:16

Sebastian

Sebastian. If you don’t like Barney then I wouldn’t use Barnaby as it’s by far the most popular diminutive. You might not use it with him, but as he grows up he may well prefer it. Barnaby also feels a bit childish as a name.

Sebastian

Sebastian

what about
Benedict
Benjamin
Blake
Beau
for B names if you want the alliteration

IStandWithMaya · 01/10/2022 22:20

Sebastian every time

ItsDefinitelyAutumn · 01/10/2022 22:21

Sebastian is a beautiful name. Bastian for short? To go with your B surname?

Luredbyapomegranate · 01/10/2022 23:59

I am not sure you want alliteration with Bas, Bastian or Barney, they are all quite characterful so it might be a Bit Much.

I like Barnaby (or better Barnabas), but if you don’t like Barney don’t use it, because you can’t control nns and mostly it does get shortened to that. Sebastian is nice enough.

I'm not keen on either, but it I had to choose it'd be Sebastian.

For long boys' names I prefer Dominic, Nathaniel, Alexander or Christopher as I like the short versions. Short, neat names are more my thing, tbh.

Noddy21 · 02/10/2022 00:39

I love them both

CuteCillian · 02/10/2022 00:41

Two of my favourite names.

LittleMrsMama · 02/10/2022 12:57

Thanks for all the comments and support. DH is over the moon that Sebastian seems to be the favourite. I’m coming around to it too and now thinking the alliteration with B surname for Barnaby would be too much after a few of you have said it.

Now to try and keep it for the next month, I’m forever changing my mind! I loved Hugo for a while but gone off it now

Thanks for the name suggestions! I love Beau but I’m now going to sound like a terrible mum… DD is so lovely and has the best personality and beautiful in her own way but not conventionally good looking. I’d worry about having an ugly boy called Beau. I know I sound terrible, to me my daughter is the most beautiful girl in the world but I know most would disagree

I can't get past the Barnaby Bear song. Sorry.

timoteigirl · 02/10/2022 13:22

Sebastian a million times rather than Barnaby.

FayCarew · 02/10/2022 17:24

Barnaby, I don't like Sebastian. Bastian is too close to bast**d, seb reminds me of seborrhoea. Seb Bunton will sound like Sebunton (substitute your surname)

ChildrenOfTheQuorn · 03/10/2022 03:25

I love alliteration! I would have chosen an alliterative first name if I found a nice enough one (I settled for a middle name). Having said that I love the name Sebastian.

FirstFormAtMalloryTowers · 03/10/2022 04:33

I have a Barnaby and a Sebastian. The names are standing the test of time - they are young adults.

So my recommendation would be to use both - one as a first name and one as a second name.

PurpleFlower1983 · 03/10/2022 23:10

Sebastian is a lovely name but everyone seems to be using it.
