I have recently heard a name that I am told was French.
It's pronounced Etty-ay
I've tried Ettier and Ettiet to try and find the correct spelling, but neither are pronounced Etty-ay
Any ideas from French speakers?

Was it Etienne?

mynameiscalypso · 30/09/2022 19:33

I'd guess Etienne too. I can't think of anything else obvious off the top of my head.

upsydupsydoo · 30/09/2022 19:33

That's what I'm wondering, but the French speaking mother definitely pronounced it with an "a" sound at the end, like in the word "aim"

Could it be e acute? Etié?

Umbellifer · 30/09/2022 19:34

Could be ete which means summer (has accent on both e’s)

sounds like eh-teh

upsydupsydoo · 30/09/2022 19:35

Perhaps! I was just curious, as it was a lovely sounding name!

Étienne Means Stephen

CornishTiger · 30/09/2022 19:36

Male name too.

accentdusoleil · 30/09/2022 19:37

Été (summer) ?

KirstenBlest · 01/10/2022 10:50

Was the child a girl or a boy?
It could be something like Hettier

upsydupsydoo · 01/10/2022 12:04

I'm really not sure re boy/girl. Too young to tell really and in gender neutral clothing. Sorry I'm being so unhelpful! I want to say girl, but I'm not sure why I got that impression!

Etienne as is St Etienne is french for Stephen lol.

Ete is summer.

My daughter is Hattie. Or 'Attie as pronounced in French.

BertaHoon · 01/10/2022 12:11

Ete as poster posted above with the accents is pronounced Et-ay.

Tbh anything sounds better in French than Midlands here 🤣

AuxArmesCitoyens · 01/10/2022 19:32

Bona fide French person here. No kids are called été. Sounds like a trendy made up name to me, the é ending is super on trend right now. Or possibly Hétiaire which is a name but very unusual.
