Ladies... I'm looking for a name that means something for my baby girl! I like to decide on a name before the baby is born!

This baby is a rainbow baby and we tried for 4 years and went through many losses and ectopics to get here..

So this is the name and meaning:

Alora

Meaning:My beautiful dream; Dreamer
Dreaming of a beautiful name for your precious baby girl? Alora is a pretty girl's name of Latin origin that means "My beautiful dream" or “dreamer”. This definition makes it an ideal choice if you want your little one to reach for the moon and stars in life! Alora is also from the Bantu language of Botswana and in African culture symbolizes “My dream.”

I have literally dreamt of this for 4 years so I thought it was very fitting.. what do you think?

I like it a lot, and a perfect meaning. Congratulations OP :)

I think it's really pretty,
I have heard of Elora befor but never Alora, it has a lovely sound to it

20viona · 27/09/2022 15:10

Yes it's nice

christmasiscominng · 27/09/2022 15:13

Opened this thread thinking 'oh god, what crackers name this time' but then...oh. Its actually really nice. And people will know how to say it. And its lovely.

Congratulations on your pregnancy.

My thoughts are you should take baby name meanings with a pinch of salt. They make loads of stuff up.

It’s a place in Spain apparently but doesn’t seem very commonly used as a name.

It does sound nice but will be frequently mis-heard as Laura I suspect.

CaptainCreepsBourgeMobile · 27/09/2022 15:15

Makes me think of Cilla Black saying "alora alora laughs."

Also sounds like it could be a brand of Aloe Vera face cream.

Enko · 27/09/2022 15:15

Personally I prefer Elora to me Alora sounds too similar to 'a Laura'

gretr · 27/09/2022 15:16

It’s not my cup of tea, but then I’m not of African origin, so I would not use a name from African culture. I think in the uk it will be misheard as Laura. Laura is a classic name and quite unusual now.

IWouldBeSuperb · 27/09/2022 15:16

There's one in my daughter's class -

Pretty name but yes, all her friends call her Laura - and it's always mis-heard as that until it's explained -

So just depends if that will bother you or not!

kuvira · 27/09/2022 15:50

It's a lovely name but I'd be curious if those meanings/origins are correct. Lots of baby name sites just make meanings up that they think will be appealing to parents.

I know a little Latin, and to my knowledge Alora doesn't mean anything in Latin. Dream in Latin is "somnium" and dreamer would be "somniator" (masculine) or "somniatrix" (feminine). I know nothing about the language of Botswana but I would not be shocked if that meaning is also incorrect.

Rachaelrachael · 27/09/2022 15:52

Never heard of this name before but it's beautiful 😊

caitlinrose · 27/09/2022 16:26

I would research this meaning very carefully and ask people who speak the language. It sounds like one of those meanings some baby name site would make up. Sorry! Wish you all the best but do some additional research if the meaning is important to you please!

I have a friend called Aisling and her name means "dream/vision" for sure if you like that meaning. She says it like ashling.

Apollonia1 · 27/09/2022 16:35

It sounds nice.
Seeing it written, I immediately thought of the Italian word "Allora".
I don't see how it means Dream in romance languages - maybe in African languages.

IShouldBeWriting · 27/09/2022 17:31

It says here that "Bilita mpash" is a Bantu word for the lingering bliss left by a beautiful dream after you wake up.

Grungeho · 27/09/2022 17:33

Beautiful name with a beautiful meaning. Congratulations on your pregnancy 🙂

CastleTower · 27/09/2022 18:02

Nice - not Latin at all though.

Strokethefurrywall · 27/09/2022 18:08

I wanted to call my daughter Elora after the baby princess in the movie Willow!

It's a fab name, you should definitely use it!

MummyT13 · 27/09/2022 19:24

Thanks Ladies 😊 my DP is South African but his dad is African so I will ask the question as maybe you're right about the meaning

😘

It’s pretty. Congratulations

DramaAlpaca · 27/09/2022 23:50

It's not my style but it's not awful. I really like that it has meaning to you.

mishmased · 28/09/2022 00:04

@MummyT13 it is a lovely name, it is not Xhosa or Zulu but it could be Sesotho or Tswana 'Lora' means to dream according to DH but he's not a fluent speaker.

DuchessOfSausage · 28/09/2022 08:58

Congratulations!
I'd check the accuracy of the origin and meaning - a quick check said it was from Hebrew.
Many will hear Laura.
