Brainstorming a boys name - suggestions?

PatronSaintOfPotplants · 26/09/2022 16:19

2weeks until delivery & DH & I are still brainstorming a possible boys name (don't know baby's sex yet).

DH prefers Theo, which I like but am wary of it being v popular atm.

I really like Rowan (especially as there's a good chance bub will be a redhead, and that is the literal meaning of the name), but DH is not (yet) convinced. He associates it with Mr Bean.

I also really like Lachlan but DH has verboten it (thinks it's too Aussie/bogan).

Haven't even got to middle names yet.

Any other related names people can suggest, for first or middle names?

Between us we have English, Irish, Scottish, Aussie & Russian heritage, so trying to stay roughly within those realms.

Rufus means redhead

QuiltedHippo · 26/09/2022 16:27

I had all your names on my list so others I liked were Hamish, Angus, Patrick, Miles, Rafe. Love Rufus suggested above too

Please not Theo its so boring now, the last 5 baby boys I've seen announced have been Theo or Teddy.

Of your two names I really like Lachlan. Hamish and Patrick are really good choices from above. I have a son named Patrick Ambrose Momtoboys. I like the way that sounds

Caleb, Logan, Jacob, Ethan, Ezra, Luka

Dexter but I'm biased! He's 17 now and loves his name. Other name we considered was Otis so the dog got that name.

Love Rowan. Ronan is also a lovely Irish name with a similar sound.

resm · 26/09/2022 21:48

Ruadhán is an Irish name that also means red haired as far as I’m aware. Similar in sound/vibe to Lachlan & Rowan. Nickname Ru is cute, but not as popular as Theo.

haribonoyoudont · 26/09/2022 22:12

For red-hair associations:
Ruairí / Ruairidh / Rory - 'red hair/great king'.
Aodhan / Aidan - 'bringer of fire'.

Oisin

Brodie is a nice Scottish name

bloominglovelyorange · 27/09/2022 07:36

congratulations on your pregnancy @PatronSaintOfPotplants

Rowan is my baby daughters name. Just to warn you that the name is on a huge upswing. In a couple of years it could well overtake Theo in the charts as the popularity of Theo has plateaued for the last few years if you look at graphs of the official numbers. Also Roman with an M is THE fastest rising boy name (risen hundreds of places to now be in top 30 and still rising). My daughter is continually in baby groups with at least one Roman and people confuse the names and get muddled which I hate. Rowan also seems to be shortened automatically to Row which I don't like but feels inevitable unfortunately.

Em2121 · 27/09/2022 08:39

I came across a Jenkin recently which I love. It’s an unusual, old fashioned first name meaning “John The Younger” with a similar sound to some you’ve mentioned (ends with an N, slightly surname-y).

DuchessOfSausage · 27/09/2022 09:06

Theo is currently by far the most popular boy's name, if you count all the Theodores. Rowan is nice but there are so many similar names popular right now (Roman, Rory, Reuben, ...) that they become samey.

Lachlan is nice but only if you say the 'ch'.

Russell - meaning is little red, or the red one.

I like Rowan and Theodore. Popularity of names is very area dependent. You can see online how many were registered in your area. Theodore and Rowan are very far down the list in my area, so are possibly more popular in cities.

Lilacsunflowers · 29/09/2022 07:56

Theo you s sooo overused and will date badly

LadyWithLapdog · 29/09/2022 08:00

Theo is lovely. I’d stick with it, regardless of popularity. It’s like Chloe or Jack who were top of the lists for years, yet you meet relatively few IRL.

KirstenBlest · 29/09/2022 08:38

I know lots of Chloes and Jacks, but I probably know more Harrys than Jacks. They seemed to be the names that everyone chose. I know several Jack and Chloe sibsets.

KirstenBlest · 29/09/2022 08:42

names.darkgreener.com/#theo
names.darkgreener.com/#theodore

Add the two together and it's by far the most popular name.
