Is it too Game of Thrones? We really love it and can’t come up with any other girl names

Awful.
Pretentious and extremely ugly.

BeautifulWar · 24/09/2022 22:27

I love it, but I loved the Madeline Miller book. I read it as Keerkay.

MothsAndWaspsAreUsefulPollinators · 24/09/2022 22:55

No, I wouldn't.

YourWinter · 24/09/2022 22:58

It was my ex’s grandfather’s Labrador’s name. Don’t do that to your child.

louderthan · 24/09/2022 23:15

I would pronounce it 'seerse' but I don't think it's accurate.
She's the sorcerer in the Odyssey who turned Odysseus' sailors into pigs. He was then unfaithful to his wife Penelope with her. I can think of better namesakes TBH, although I do like this J William Waterhouse painting of her...

Circe?
louderthan · 24/09/2022 23:16

The more I say 'Seerse' actually the more I like it...

louderthan · 24/09/2022 23:19

Threads like this always remind me of the brother and sister at my school who were called Orlando and Jocasta. Known to everyone as Olly and Jo 😂😂

Nah

MarmiteCoriander · 25/09/2022 01:56

I've never watched Game of Thrones nor The Odessy, so have never seen this name before. My first guess at reading it would be a misspell of 'circle'? Best guess would be Ser-chee?

LadybirdsLadybirds · 25/09/2022 02:08

Just looks like a typo of Circle.

IShouldBeWriting · 25/09/2022 13:32

If it's the pronunciation you are after, Saoirse might work for you.
Circe could be read "curse".

midsomermurderess · 25/09/2022 13:40

I think it’s rather marvellous and how many people really care about meaning? A few years ago, it was all, oh no not Claudia, it means lame! from some prissy show offs and that really stuck, was parroted in thread after thread. These people are desperate show offs, in men, it’s golf-club bores.

DuchessOfSausage · 25/09/2022 13:41

Was on the list of names for DC1. It's pronounced Sersee

@IShouldBeWriting , Saoirse is not pronounce Sirsa or like Circe.

Saoirse is pronounced two ways depending on location. Sear- sha or sur-sha.... neither are any bit like circe

It's not quite the same as Claudia though, which is a well known name, @midsomermurderess. The meaning of Claudia has become somewhat irrelevant. Most people don't think about the meaning or origin of names. They will know or know of lots of Claudias. It's become "just a name".

Circe is such an unusual name that people who know the name will only know it as the sorceress from The Odyssey and probably think it is a bit of a strange choice to name your DD after a witch. If they don't know it, they will probably google it and learn it is the name of the sorceress from The Odyssey and probably think it is a bit of a strange choice... Or they will know Cirsei from GoT and think it is that.

Personally, I like it, but it comes with a lot of baggage.

Angrymum22 · 25/09/2022 13:52

She will end up being called Sissy because other children will struggle to pronounce it.

sageandbasil · 25/09/2022 13:54

It looks like circle

FindingMeno · 25/09/2022 13:55

I like it.

AlmostOver22 · 25/09/2022 13:57

love it. Also like saoirse (sp) too and agree with pp that they’re similar if you read Circe as ser-see and saoirse as seer-shuh

Rasin · 25/09/2022 14:02

I like it, but I immediately thought GOT. Now I know the Homer connection, it’s a lot of baggage as people say. But more, much more, than that: no one quite knows, or agrees on, the pronunciation. For that alone, I’d make it a middle name.

A school mum friend’s new baby is called something very unpronounceable (Dutch) beginning with an O. She told me once, and I can’t for the life of me remember how to pronounce it. I call the child by the short nickname (easy to pronounce) and so does she in my presence. This is entirely because I am stuck on the pronunciation. A shame, since I don’t like the nickname and would like to actually use the true name! Sirse, kirke, I suppose kids can learn that pretty fast, but it’s all the new people you meet, or the doc receptionists etc, … for the rest of your entire life.

Luredbyapomegranate · 25/09/2022 14:32

I like it, nothing wrong with a bit of sorcery, how else was a woman in Ancient Greece going to get her way?

Even if I didn’t know it I’d guess ser-see and I think because of GOT it’s familiar.

it’s a nice name, unusual without being wacky. There’s a nice pre-Raph painting of her

I agree! I think that’s why I like the name so much. I also like Lilith, so maybe that’s just my taste
