I love a baby name but worried about mispronunciation

I love the girls names Georgiana
pronounced George - ee - ar - nah
I know a lot of people say George - Jay - Nah due to the film with Keira Knightly. I know some people believe this the true pronunciation and others say it was an affection nickname used by very few and one being the Duchess.
I only like the first pronunciation (like in bbc pride & prejudice)
I know there is no other way I can spell it.
What do you think? Do you think it would get often mispronounced or not? Does it matter? Curious what thoughts are.
My other name i’m considering is Eliana.
thanks!

I know it’s regional but there’s no R.
4 syllables George Ee Ann Ahh
Georgee-Anna

DuchessOfSausage · 24/09/2022 12:38

@eleanorsmellstrop , Georgaina woud be Jor-Gay-na.

I would read Georgiana as George-ay-na or Georgie-ah-na.
Some will say it as Georgie-Anna.
Some will get the letters mixed up.
Eliana is insipid and will be yet another Ellie

Georgiana is too long and will get shortened. All the Georginas I know are Gina or George

Pemba · 24/09/2022 12:54

We've had this before. The 'jor--Jay-na' pronunciation is not ' correct', it was just a temporary fashion amongst a clique of upper class people around the time the film 'The Duchess' was set. Not everyone said it that way most Georgians and Victorians would probably still have said 'George-ee-ah-na'. Which is logical by the spelling and matches other names ending 'ana'.

Anyway OP, TBH I find it a bit too long and fussy. I prefer Georgina which flows beautifully and no pronunciation ambiguities. Second to that, Georgia.
You will get Georgie whatever you do.

Purpletopaz42 · 24/09/2022 12:56

I'd go for Georgiana, I think it's lovely and I would pronounce it the same way you do. Georgie is a great nickname. I also really like Georgina. I prefer Georgiana to Eliana personally and I imagine Eliana could also be pronounced in different ways so I think stick with the name you love.

WildfellAnne · 24/09/2022 13:02

I think the pronunciation of Georgiana your way is fine and as common as the other pronunciation. It’s a nice name and much stronger than Eliana.

bcc89 · 24/09/2022 14:06

Georgiana and Georgina are two different names. I think you've got yourself confused.

Pemba · 24/09/2022 14:20

I think YOU are confused. OP is not talking about Georgina, she is talking about the two different pronunciations of Georgiana.

No I know that, Georgiana has two pronunciations. Georgina has been a name mentioned a lot, which is a very lovely name but I prefer Georgiana as I enjoy the ‘Ana’ sound. I was just asking about the George - ee - ah - nah vs George - jay - nah pronunciation.

Now I also have to worry about Georgie - Anna (which I don’t like 😂)

I have only known George-jay- nahs but I think both pronounciations are fine and it’s a very pretty name. If you love it then go for it .

MsSnow · 24/09/2022 14:34

I think I will stick with the name I love and i will just correct people. I mean, family and friends will know the correct name and anyone else doesn’t really matter that much. Plus, the name getting mistaken for Georgina doesn’t offend me as it’s still a lovely name so I think I don’t really worry about that :)
I know a lot of people find it too long or fussy but I like long names so I guess it’s preference and there are so many names I hear that aren’t to my taste either.
I like that’s it’s long and it sounds lovely when said in full but also has many options to be shortened, which also sound lovely - imo of course :)

so I will just stick with the name I love. Georgiana and Georgie / Gigi for short. Thank you for all your help everyone as it really has helped me decide to just go with it! ❤️

@MsSnow for what it’s worth, I don’t think there’s a big issue with having a name that requires spelling/correcting. It’s sometimes leads to people remembering you better and it’s a conversation starter too. People like to engage when you have an unusual ish name in my experience, and I think it builds confidence when you’re little. I have one that’s somewhat unusual and I’ve notice people seem to like having something to say about it. It tends to lead to a few extra seconds of friendly conversation in a way that being called “Ann” doesn’t seem to. Worst case scenario- she ends up going by Georgie all the time and most people can manage that.

Cindie943811A · 24/09/2022 14:49

As someone else has mentioned the difference in pronunciation between Hans and ana is regional. Southerners etc who favour the “dark A” or ah sound will use the OP’s preferred pronunciation (RP).
Thus most names containing the ana or Anna element will in other area of the UK tend to have the alternative pronunciation. No right or wrong really but stick to your own preferred version.

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 24/09/2022 14:52

Yes it will get mispronounced, but I'd guess more people will read it as Georgina than pronounce it as Geor-jay-nah, but I don't think it's a massive deal either way. Even the simplest of names get misspelled and mispronounced. Few names are immune so go for the name you love.

Love Georgie for short. Reminds me of 60s-tastic Georgy Girl song by The Seekers.

I love the name and your nicknames. Especially Gigi! Have no regrets and go for it!

Luredbyapomegranate · 24/09/2022 17:18

The vast majority of people will say it the way you want.

As far as I know the Geor-jay-nah pronunciation was invented by the Duchess of D’s inner circle as a clique-y affectation.

I don’t think it will get confused with Georgina much, because that’s pretty unusual now.

I like it much better than Eliana which I think is quite Disney princess sounding and also the world doesn’t need any more Ella/Ellies

France98 · 24/09/2022 18:26

Georgie-anna

No idea why people are saying Georgie-ar-na. Where is that second R coming from?

buttons123456 · 24/09/2022 18:33

George Jay nah is Georgina

Georgiana is a completely different name

I'm one of them and I'm Georgie but often people call me Gregory 🤣🤣

Often people can't spell or say my name but I still love it and I'm glad I've got it in a generation of boring samey names

Pemba · 24/09/2022 18:38

No George Jay Nah is never Georgina.. Unless you have some very weird accent maybe, I can't even think what type of accent that could be

Pemba · 24/09/2022 18:41

Georgina = George ee nah

GrimmTales · 24/09/2022 18:42

France98 · 24/09/2022 18:26

Georgie-anna

No idea why people are saying Georgie-ar-na. Where is that second R coming from?

It can’t be Georgie-anna, because it ends in ana, not anna, which is a different sound altogether. People write Georgie-ar-na, whereas perhaps Georgie-ah-na is better understood. They sound exactly the same to many people, depending on your accent.

J0y · 24/09/2022 18:58

Wherever you're from don't say Georgee onwards, it sounds so silly.. Georgee anna.

Don't be weird!! Don't be like Americans saying possssta (pasta)

J0y · 24/09/2022 18:59

My phone! I was trying to type dont say Georgee onna

goldfinchonthelawn · 24/09/2022 19:03

Why not Georgina? That's a beautiful name and doesn't have any confusion over pronunciation. She can then be Georgie (lovely) or Gina or George - whatever she or you prefer.

It's one of my favourite girl's names. (Love Georgia too.)
