Traditional but not boring

Please help. Looking for something with 1/2 syllables. Easy to spell and pronounce but not too common. Not sure if we're having a boy or girl yet.

I like George, James, William etc but now there's likely go be 2/3 in their class. For girls I quite like shortened versions of classics ie. Maggie for Margaret or Betty for Elizabeth but same issue.

Please help.

I don't think there'll be multiple Maggie's or Betty's - I know one Maggie, no Betty's at all.

Or how about
John, Peter or David for a boy
or
Lisa, Mary, Cara for a girl

Icequeen01 · 24/09/2022 07:20

I love the name Andrew for a boy. Traditional but not too common.

OP, beware all the vowelly names en vogue right now if you want to avoid double-ups in class. I'd suggest you go mid-century chic.

Even the most popular names now are given to c. 1% of babies. Even with the most popular names, it is very unlikely to have more than 1 in a class of 30. This is different to when we were young.

In my daughter's nursery, there are two Austins and two Skyes. No Oliver, Olivia, George, William, etc. In fact, no top 10 names at all among anyone we know.

George: 0.7% of babies (less than 1 in 100)
William: 0.35% (less than 1 in 200)
James: 0.35%
Elizabeth: 0.14% (less than 1 in 500)
Margaret: 0.02% (about 1 in 5000!)

Use the names you like!

Boys names:
I have a Michael 😊 I’m yet to meet another! He’s 3 now.

Other traditional names I like: Francis, Thomas, David, Jonathan, Matthew - we are into biblical names here 😆 I’ve met some little Thomases and Jonathans but not the others yet.

Thanks all. I think that's the issue there's so few names I like and even fewer that DH and I agree on. Were also avoiding ex partners names for obvious reasons which include a few that I would otherwise shortlist.

Maggie is cute but reminds me of Thatcher and I feel like there will be so many Elizabeth's with the queens death. I like Hazel and Violet but DH doesn't.

Boys are even harder. We want something strong but know so many people already with the names we like(Adam, Chris, Johnny etc.) It doesn't help my husband has a tonne of cousins all with kids of their own with names he doesn't want to use like Finn which I love.

I don't think there will be many Maggies or Betty's so that's an option.

I think Margaret/Maggie is well overdue a comeback.

Nobody born now will remember Thatcher.

Thanks all. I'm leaning to Patrick, Max and Kit. For girls I'm still struggling. I do like Hazel, Bea and Lottie. I like nature names. My friends little one is Iris which I love. 2 friends recently called their girls Maggie so I just don't think I can go there.

Hazel is nice.

I'd be really surprised if there a ton of Elizabeths. Eliza, Liza and Bess are nice alternative shortened forms if you are not sure.
I'd try to stay away from any nicknamey forms that are too sweet or babyish. Like Lottie is really awful, sorry. Very twee on anyone over about 8.

Flynn instead of Finn?

Hadtocomment · 24/09/2022 19:47

Josephine, Nora and Frida

I like Kitty for Katherine. Elinor (Nell?). Mabel is quite in vogue. It's a shame Thatcher has done for Maggie as I like Maggie.

If you like nature names what about Rowan (girl or boy) or Sylvia/Sylvie (means woodland). I like Hazel too. A shame your DH doesn't. How about Daphne, Holly, Ivy or Bryony?
