Nice option for a girl name? It means mermaid in Portuguese but as I am English and live in England Im not sure if it will be prounounced incorrectly based off the spelling...

'Suh-Ray-Uh' (nickname Raya)

Thoughts please but not too mean lol I do have other options but I'm expecting my first daughter after 5 boys and I don't want something on the most popular lists so just trying to find something a bit different :)

I like the sound of the name Suraya although it sounds Indian to my ears rather than Portuguese. And Ray or Raya is a nice nickname. As you don't have any connections to Portugal though I'd be tempted to spell it as it sounds in English. I'd be pronouncing it Se -ree -ah otherwise which doesn't sound nearly as nice.

Just looked it up and Suraya is apparently Persian. Which reminds me I love the name Persia too.

Prefer Serena, and it does remind me la sirinita the little mermaid. I think "siren" as well as mermaid. Bit too raquel welsh??
Raya is lovely tho. Andrea / reya is another option.

vulpix123 · 23/09/2022 16:22

Yes you are right, I think se-ree-ah doesn't sound as good , maybe sounds too close to Syria like the country?

Suraya is a good way to spell it to avoid confusion and I just found Serayah too but then they lose the meaning mermaid!
Persia is cool!

Serena is quite nice, I did have seren on the list at one point which is close to that meaning " star " but didn't feel right.
Reya is a nice way of spelling it

You're going to have 6 children Shock?!

I like the sound of Sereia but would probably spell it Suraya.

KangarooKenny · 23/09/2022 16:52

It’s too like Syria for me.

Cassimin · 23/09/2022 16:55

I went to school with a girl who’s name was Sorayah, pronounced as you are saying it.
Her parents were from Arabia.
Beautiful name.

cheeseandpeanutbutter · 23/09/2022 16:55

I really like it. I like the sound and love the meaning. People would get used to it so quickly. I work with kids and have come across many weird and wonderful names and people would definitely get used to the spelling and pronunciation.

I just hear the start of Psoriasis. 😳

J0y · 23/09/2022 18:04

Oh blimey yes. Psoriasis 😵

Luredbyapomegranate · 23/09/2022 20:52

I think if you spell it Suraya it’s quite nice

Sanchia is nice too

Or Saphina

ThickCutSteakChips · 23/09/2022 20:59

I like the sound of it, but written down it does look like some kind of infectious disease or something?

ThickCutSteakChips · 23/09/2022 21:00

I know a Suraya but they pronounce it 'suh-rye-a'. I do like that name though.

UnagiForLife · 23/09/2022 21:03

I like the sound of that name but if you hadn’t written it out phonetically I would have struggled to pronounce it from the spelling. Beautiful name though.

kuvira · 23/09/2022 21:06

I think it's lovely and a lot of young girls would love to have a name that means "mermaid". Sure, there will be questions about the spelling and pronunciation but almost everyone with a non-traditional or non-English name faces those questions.

Have you heard of Mireia/Mireya? It's a Catalan/Spanish name and also beautiful.

vulpix123 · 25/09/2022 10:59

Thanks everyone I will certainly have to think about this one and the spelling if I do go for this name. I am laughing at the psoriasis lol that is not what I am going for!!
And thank you 2 the ladies who have suggested other names I will add them to my list of names :)
