What do you think of Nazli for a baby girl?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Dinoteeth · 22/09/2022 00:00

Really? I can't decide if your being serious or not but I'll throw in my tuppence worth.
A little too close to Nazi.

Amarette · 22/09/2022 00:02

Definitely too close to Nazi. Just imagine the teasing in the playground/school/uni/work for the rest of her life.

autumnpumpkinspice · 22/09/2022 00:06

Would it make a difference to spell it like Nazlie?
I’ve seen it spelt this way before. In Turkish it has a really pretty meaning & it’s a very common known first name. @Amarette @Dinoteeth

villamariavintrapp · 22/09/2022 00:07

No it's still too close

BluebellsareBlue · 22/09/2022 00:08

Ooh I'm
Getting nazi as a nickname, please think about this, kids (and people) can be cruel

Dinoteeth · 22/09/2022 00:09

Naslie maybe but that's pushing towards nasal as in nose.

Honestly ditch it and find something else.

GlassDeli · 22/09/2022 00:10

Would Nasli be a valid spelling?

WhiteCatmas · 22/09/2022 00:13

Too close to Nazgul.

Aquamarine1029 · 22/09/2022 00:14

Nope. Not a chance. Don't do this to a child.

MarmiteCoriander · 22/09/2022 00:19

I actually didn't read it with a Nazi connection to the pronunciation, but as Nase-ely, in terms of related to the nose! Not a great name for a child, sorry.

WhiteCatmas · 22/09/2022 00:13

Too close to Nazgul.

That is an actual girl's name in Central Asia. Tolkien used a lot of Turkic names for his (negative) characters.

chalkyc2 · 22/09/2022 00:22

I have a Turkish friend called Asli - actually pronounced As-luh/Asla. Would that be an alternative?

Hoowhoowho · 22/09/2022 00:25

I know a Nazli. I always think it’s like Natalie rather than Nazi. Not the same sound as Nazi at all.

KirstenBlest · 22/09/2022 08:09

My sleep-deprived eyes read it as Nazi.

caitlinrose · 22/09/2022 08:26

I think it's a pretty name but even though it doesn't sound like the unfortunate word it looks like it a lot at first glance so I would personally avoid it.

kuvira · 22/09/2022 09:00

It might be fine if you're Turkish and it's a well-known and accepted name in your neighbourhood.

Otherwise, I would avoid it - the similarity to "Nazi" is bound to come up at some point.

pilates · 23/09/2022 21:39

Please don’t

user1492757084 · 25/09/2022 16:04

No

Fotini is sweet.

PatronSaintOfPotplants · 26/09/2022 16:35

I read it as being like Natalie. I think if you're Turkish go for it, it's lovely.

largeprintagathachristie · 26/09/2022 16:36

I read it as Nazi, sorry.
it’s just too close.

Luredbyapomegranate · 28/09/2022 22:57

I would think of Nazi or it sounds a bit like Nathalie with an estuary accent - Na’ly

Some names just don’t cross language barriers well and I think this is one of them

Cheeselog · 28/09/2022 23:00

I read it as the short a like Natalie too. Didn’t make the Nazi connection until I read the other posts.

thegreylady · 28/09/2022 23:33

I know a very sweet Turkish Nazli with a sister named Asli. Both sound great in Turkey but I don’t think they sound right here whereas as many Turkish girls’ names do work eg Elfi, Selen, Serra, Ozen (pronounced Ozanne) and Ceren (pronounced Jeran).

PrimarilyParented · 28/09/2022 23:35

You’re mispronouncing it if you’re going for Turkish as it’s pronounced more like naz-luh.

it’s a pretty name in Turkish. But if you’re not Turkish and given everyone’s associations so far on this thread I wouldn’t use it.
