We have just been discussing girls names... even though we're convinced we are having a boy!

Think we have decided on Martha Edith, but we both really love the name Hephzibah... it's a hebrew name that means something like 'my delight is in her'. It would be shortened to Effie or Eppie, but we're not sure we're brave enough.

Your thoughts please.....

Hey! DD1 is Lola. What exactly is wrong with naming your child after a lapdancing tranxual?

Threadie · 24/01/2008 12:26

My DS2 is named after someone who was cuckolded by God, and someone who was thrown into a pit by his big brothers because his dad bought him a nice coat.

I lov that Kinks song. I saw them once in Kansas City and they came out on four encores. It was a fab show. (Gawd I'm old!)

i was at school with a boy Lindsay and i felt sorry for him

personally I don't really like the name Hepzibah. dh wanted to call a boy Meirion (welsh nonsense boy name) - thank god we had girls both times...

BeMyLilBaby · 24/01/2008 12:29

I hope that nnnooooo-etc was about Hepsibah and not Lola. As Lola is a fine name.

Threadie · 24/01/2008 12:38

Used to know a little boy called Miles.

Everyone called him Kilometers for short.

bethoo · 24/01/2008 12:40

Yes, all finished thank goodness. Still feel like a bit of a detested parent because of it all, by the head anyway, but at least it's gone.

1dilemma · 25/01/2008 22:43

(Relieved to hear the bithday table has gone what a hideous hideous idea) Aren't lots of Old Testament names popular with Christians in Africa and sections of the American population to name a few?

ilove8pm · 26/01/2008 10:14

and indeed 1dilemma, in our little suburb right here the OT names are big at the moment - standing in our local park listening to all the names, its like an Old Testament roll call at the pearly gates!! noah, elijah, isaiah, isaac, caleb, jonah etc etc. not that i am moaning as thats where we chose our ds name from too!

3andnomore · 27/01/2008 22:39

hm...bit hard to pronounce....

NKF · 27/01/2008 22:44

I think it's spelled Hepzibah.

3andnomore · 27/01/2008 22:49

seeing it as Hepzibah...hm...makes it a tad worse...what with Hep A and B and stuff...would ahve to be very careful the name isn't shortened to Hep...

edam · 27/01/2008 22:53

back to Hepzibah... I think you'd have to be a brave parent. If I came across a little girl with this name I'd assume her mother's favourite book was Silas Marner.

Mind you, names that make you draw breath do grow on you once you get to know the person. But it would mean her name would always be an issue. Whenever she met someone and told them her name, there would always be a small pause before they reacted.

CaptainCod · 27/01/2008 22:53

no
poncey

Janni · 28/01/2008 09:18

And each new teacher who read her name on the register would probably do a little roll of the eyes. Would that bother you?

SSSandy2 · 28/01/2008 09:48

Not too keen on Hepzibah but having repeatedly read it throughout 5 pages of this thread, it is growing on me.

I agree with Anna that use of OT names in families of Christian background is pretty much an Anglo-Saxon thing. Here in Germany if you have a name common in the UK like Simon, David, Benjamin, Rebecca, Sarah, Hannah people will assume that you must be Jewish. Not to mention Aaron, Leah or something less common.
