Diana

Diana is my second choice for a girl's name and I wondered what the general view of the name was. Would you assume a mother of a Diana was a royal family superfan type (when I actually lean more republican) or is that a fading reference for a girl born in 2023/4?

I don’t like it because of the ‘die’ bit of the name, but that aside, yes I would think you were a Princess Diana fan and held strong opinions on the royal family.

kuvira · 17/09/2022 14:23

Diana is a popular name in many European countries. Probably more so than in Britain. I know somebody through work who has an adult daughter named Diana and while it's possible she was named after the princess, I wouldn't assume that was the case. It's a old name from Roman mythology so I don't think you would have to be some kind of Princess Diana superfan to choose it.

Maireas · 17/09/2022 14:25

It's interesting that it's never been a particularly popular name in the UK, even after the late Princess became popular.

1994girl · 17/09/2022 14:25

Nah

J0y · 17/09/2022 14:26

It's time for a come back. I met a baby Diana recently although baby's mam said dee-anna

inmyslippers · 17/09/2022 14:27

I'd assume you was a Greek mythology fan and had fantastic taste

Fireyflies · 17/09/2022 14:30

I'd think of it as a rather old fashioned name tbh. And most of the Dianas I've ever known were shortened to Di, which isn't a great name

BestCatMumEver · 17/09/2022 14:53

Really don’t like it. It feels quite old fashioned. I do know one grown up Diana who’s in her 20s and even on her it feels really dated. Di is not a good shortening either.

Nsky62 · 17/09/2022 14:59

My name, tho folk use Di, or get it wrong as in Diane which I hate

DelphiniumBlue · 17/09/2022 14:59

I knew lots of Diane/Dianas when I was at school, in the 60s/70s.
There's one Diana in my school now, who is not from the UK.
I had expected there would have been loads of babies called Diana after her death, but this didn't happen, and the name has gone the same way as Susan, Carol and Debbie. Probably due a comeback in about 15 years time.

21secondstogo · 17/09/2022 15:00

I only know one In her 50s. I don’t know why it’s not more popular for younger people.

JaninaDuszejko · 17/09/2022 15:04

It's a classic name and I wouldn't assume you were a royalist. And while it feels a bit old fashioned that's in a good way, one of those lovely grown up women names like Frances, Margaret or Caroline.

Luredbyapomegranate · 17/09/2022 15:04

A fading reference

I really like it - Diana the huntress and a 30s glamour, I think it’s a good time for a revival

NorthernDuckling · 19/09/2022 21:37

My sister is Diana (30s) and I’m Frances, I was very nearly Henrietta (I am eternally grateful I’m not). My parents aren’t royalist, they just liked traditional names.
DSis really suits Diana, at school a lot of her friends called her Dido (think she tried to make it a bit cool) but now she’s a bit older she uses Diana. I think it’s a lovely name, she did briefly have a boyfriend called Harry (who called himself Henry when they were together and then reverted to Harry after they split up)) I’d go with it if you like it.
Don’t think she gets any Charles and Di comments.

Thewolvesarerunningagain · 19/09/2022 21:54

It's a wonderful name, and of course Wonderwoman's name! You wouldn't have to go with Di as a nickname; Didi, Dena, Dita or Dido are alternatives.

PrimroseWharf · 19/09/2022 21:58

I really like it! I also thought of Wonder Woman. Could you use Ana/Anna as a nickname?

DuchessOfSausage · 20/09/2022 10:06

I like it

MotherOfWhippets · 20/09/2022 10:10

It's lovely.

I always think of the huntress.

soulinablackberrypie · 21/09/2022 22:36

I don't really like the way it sounds, although the goddess is a nice association. I probably wouldn't assume it was a princess reference after all this time, but I do think it has a rather aristocratic and possibly stand-offish vibe.

schoolsoutforever · 22/09/2022 21:07

I like Diana but I might look for a nn for when she was little. It seems quite a grown-up name to me.

SummaLuvin · 22/09/2022 21:30

I think it's absolutely beautiful. While my first thought (and reason for personally avoiding it) is association with the royal family, I wouldn't assume a little Diana had royal obsessive parents.

GobbolinoTheWitchesCat · 22/09/2022 21:34

I love it, but judging by the continual media articles and seemingly endless posts of social media (including here), I don't think its a fading reference at all!

WhoppingBigBackside · 22/09/2022 21:50

Grace used to be strongly associated with Princess G, but not too the same extent.

WhoppingBigBackside · 22/09/2022 21:51

to not too.

Guineapiggiesmalls · 22/09/2022 22:02

I love it! When I had my little girl, I asked the midwife what her favourite baby name had been and she said Diana and it almost swayed me 🥰
