Short Irish Boys names - suggestions?

Chiliprepper · 15/09/2022 09:20

Daydreaming about boys names - Irish but living in Scotland with the possibility of moving back in a few years. Have a Conall already

Like but don’t love:
Dara
Aodh
Eoin/Eoghan
Brian (wouldn’t use it outside of Ireland I don’t think)
Shay

Does anyone have any suggestions we could add to the list? Preferably short names I think

Óran, Cathal/Cal, Fergus, Iarla, Naoise, Diarmuid, Art, Tadhg, Dara, Oisín, Cillian, Lorcan, Donncha, Aidan, Cian, Seán?

Ifyouknowyouknowyouknow · 15/09/2022 09:30

I know a little Ruadh. Also Rian, Cian, Cuan, Art.

Not short but I adore Donnchadh.

OakAshBeech · 15/09/2022 09:32

Cian
Liam
Seán

I love Conall.
Love Aodh, but might be a bit tricky as it sounds like an initial (so do Kay and Jay, but Aodh isn't as well known and less obvious how to pronounce),

bjrce · 15/09/2022 09:35

Garvan
Conor
Cillian
Ruairi
Tadhg

Chiliprepper · 15/09/2022 09:40

Thanks!

I like Fionn but know lots of fionn/Finn/Finley’s which puts me off a bit.

Like Tadgh too but wonder if the sound is too close Taig if we moved back - is that an issue anyone has come across?

Eamon has the ‘sound’ I like but don’t live the name of that makes any sense…!

Sean, Oran, Diarmuid going on the list I think

Also Liam! Great! Know a few my age in scotland but none at all in Ireland, like it a lot

Not too short but Naoise, Lorcan, and Cormac are favourites of mine.

TooBigForMyBoots · 15/09/2022 09:54

Ultan

Ifyouknowyouknowyouknow · 15/09/2022 09:58

Re Oran - I know a couple of Scottish ones and they pronounce it like the beginning of “orange” with a short o, whereas I much prefer Odhran with the o to sound like door, bore, core etc (not a linguist so don’t know how to describe properly!).

Stripsorspots · 15/09/2022 10:01

I wouldn't go with Aodh, Tadgh, Ruadh or other names which aren't pronounced as written - he will spend his life correcting people if he doesn't live in Ireland.

I'd go with Sean or Darren for shorter names, go well with Conall

Palmfrond · 15/09/2022 10:11

Paddy

Chiliprepper · 15/09/2022 10:12

What do people think of Shay? Would you automatically think short for Seamus? DH thinks that would be the assumption in the UK anyway

Insideallday · 15/09/2022 10:13

Cian

Shay is lovely, I have a neighbor called Shay and he is a lovely lad so I’m biased.

Chavvy is not a word I care for, but for want of a better one I’d say Shay sounds a bit chavvy.

Palmfrond · 15/09/2022 10:20

Art is a great name.

Onekidnoclue · 15/09/2022 10:32

Liam is lovely. Cian is a bit harder. Shay is often used as a girls name.
rory or rian?

LaTangerina · 15/09/2022 10:39

Oisin
Finn
Senan
Aodh
Cillian
Faolan
Fintan
Lorcan

SudocremOnEverything · 15/09/2022 10:40

Colm

TowerStork · 15/09/2022 10:46

One to add to the above lists: Iarla

TheVanguardSix · 15/09/2022 11:23

I love Shay, OP. One of the loveliest boys I’ve ever met is called Shay. His brother is Beau. I definitely wouldn’t assume Shay is short for Seamus.

KittytheHare · 15/09/2022 11:25

Niall

DotDotDotDotDot · 15/09/2022 11:50

I love Tadgh, my favourite Irish boys name. Eoin might work for you too. The Conall I know has a brother called Fintan.
