Name endings

Hi all

If your son or daughters name ended in a particularly sound, E.g. 'a' or 'ie', would that put you off using a name with the same ending sound for a second child?

I hope that makes sense!
For example - Isla and Amelia, Olivia and Ava, Finley and Alfie, Charlie and Archie.

Thanks all!

I think it's common for siblings' names to share the same ending - particularly 'a' ending names for sisters. I think as long as the names don't rhyme or sound very similar it's fine. e.g. Fiona and Catriona is ok, as is Eleanor and Alastair. But Barry and Larry isn't great!

@User6761 thank you for replying. We have a DS with a 'e' sound ending name and my favourite girls name also is the same 'E' sound at the end. I just didn't know if I was overthinking it!

No I think it's nice. All of mine end in a sound

DurdleSnore · 15/09/2022 22:27

Nope, I know lots of siblings with the same ending. You’re overthinking.

A neighbour had an Ainsleigh and when they found out they were having a third girl, they mangled the spelling of the name they liked just so it ended in eigh again. I've changed the names for privacy, but let's just imagine the kid's name was Mareigh (pronounced Marie). It's not an awful name, but the poor kid has spent 25 years telling people they are spelling her name wrong.

There would be absolutely nothing wrong with having an Ainsleigh and a Marie and even a Kelly, imo.

I think it's absolutely fine to use the same ending sound. I know a Sofia, Amelia and Catrina who are sisters. They like their names and I don't think anyone's ever commented that they have the same endings. It didn't occur to me until I started thinking about it, when I read your post.

People tend to like a certain sounds ime so you often get siblings with the same end sound.

I think it depends on the names. To me, names like Archie and Ellie sound too much together, so also would beToby and Rosie etc. Ee sounds can be very cutesy, and that effect is heightened with siblings, so I’d want to be careful. It’s common for girl names to end in -a or -e, but I’d avoid matching sounds if possible.
