Middle Names for Prudence

We have just found out we are pregnant with our first.
My partner and I both like Prudence (nn Pru) for a first name but we are struggling with middle names…
My Grandmother is called Irene (goes by Rene (Ree-knee), hates Irene) which we would like to include, however Rene (strong eeeee ending) Rhymes poorly with our surname.
The best we have come up with so far is Prudence Irene Aster Surname
Any advise / suggestions would be appreciated!!

Your suggestion is fine. I like Irene (eye-reeny) and Renée (Renay).
Just avoid the dull-as-ditchwater filler middle names like Rose, Grace and May.

PearlSupernova · 14/09/2022 10:28

We do love Rose too, but feel it’s far too common as a middle name

Prudence is pretty but my husband would never agree as he doesn't like eccentric names very much.

How about Irina? Prudence Irina Aster, would that work?

I think with Rene people will think of the masculine version of Renée and it will get mispronounced.

Prudence Irene Aster is fine too!

inappropriateraspberry · 14/09/2022 11:56

If it's a middle name I wouldn't worry about it rhyming. It will only be used on forms and if she gets married or goes to court!
I think it's lovely.

whatausername · 14/09/2022 12:23

I wouldn't worry about a middle name not going great with a surname. However, I do rather like the twist of Aster in there, Prudence and Irene have a different vibe to it.

Happenchance · 14/09/2022 15:20

I wouldn't use Irene if your grandmother hates it. Could Wren/Ren be a compromise? Or could you use her middle name or maiden name?

I would ensure your DD has a middle name that she could use if she hates being called Prudence/Pru (which I would). I don't think Aster is a good choice because it can be shortened to Ass, whereas Pru will get changed to Pooh by young children and teenagers alike.

Suggestions:
Prudence Amelia Wren
Prudence Olivia Wren

I really like Prudence Irene Aster, it’s terribly glamorous 30s which is the next decade to be in it seems. In an age of lots of Margots and Constances I can’t see that Prudence is especially eccentric.

You could always go for Prudence Irina?

Prudence Irene/Irina Rosalind also works

Prudence Irene Constancia

Prudence Irene Flora

Prudence Irene Stella

Prudence Irene Camilla..

I think Irene (the proper 3 syllables pronunciation) will be back soon, so maybe tell your granny too dust it off..

This is just a matter of perspective though, I like Prudence, but think Wren (or even worse Ren) is appallingly faddy, and Olivia and Amelia while nice, have been done to death.

LOVE Prudence Irene Aster. What a fabulous name!

J0y · 14/09/2022 20:43

Thanks for your positive comments and helpful suggestions!

I think Irina could work!

As for Aster, we want to include some floral / botanical element, and love the ‘Star’ meaning. Open to other Floral suggestions, but probably want to avoid anything very common such as Rose or Lily (even though we love them!)

Sorry, should have mentioned, partner has veto’ed Flora and Stella because of the brands…

@caitlinrose - Prudence is hardly eccentric! A virtue name popular in Puritan New England and in the Victorian era - like Faith, Hope etc

Bretonbear · 15/09/2022 07:46

Prudence Irene Aster is so beautiful, reminds me of a glamorous 1930s movie star name.

Prudence is far from eccentric. Margot isn't a virtue name, so unlike Prudence (and Constance), it doesn't perpetuate the idea that females should embody certain virtues that are passive and keep them in their place.

Prudence is also an unfortunate name if you can't pronounce R properly.

Greenlee · 15/09/2022 23:42

How about Rhiannon (Rhee) ?

nancydroo · 15/09/2022 23:49

Cordelia
Emerald
Felicity
Clarissa

We certainly are not naming our child Prudence to perpetuate the idea that a female should be passive and kept in her place… far from it

Prudence to me means good judgement, wisdom, intelligence and caution, good virtues for a child of either sex to posses or aspire to

@Greenlee God no. The Ree-annun version of Rhiannon is not nice.
It's nice when said by a Welsh speaker.
