Charlie - Now too 'royal'?

Hi all,

I'm due next month. We struggled to find a name for a while, and we finally agreed on Charlie a few months ago. We have since been referring to him, talking to him etc and that really feels like his name.

We are not Royalists (not dead against them either, just indifferent!) but I can't stop this feeling that with recent events he will forever be plagued with "Oh, is he/are you named after the King" type comments, which would bug me. Every birthday party would be around the same time as coronation type stuff, etc.

Am I over-thinking this and nobody would make the connection? The few people I've asked have laughed and said I'd better come up with a new name, but nothing seems like his name now!

Thanks for opinions, kind MNers

yep over thinking it.
Charlie is an awesome name... popular but classic and can't see that changing. People are unlikely to associate your child's age with the coronation of the new king after the first few months.

Unless it's short for His Majesty King Charles III I think you should be fine Wink

lndnbrdge91 · 12/09/2022 16:51

I think king Charles has always been more of a Charles than a Charlie and if you like the name you should use it! Especially if you use the shortened version on birth cert.

bodie1890 · 12/09/2022 16:51

Well it sounds like it's already well and truly his name, OP. You're overthinking it :) It's a lovely name and not the same as Charles anyway.

Every birthday party would be around the same time as coronation type stuff, etc.

What do you mean - like jubilees? They don't happen that often - silver jubilee is 25 years and to be honest with the state of his health he is probably not going to be king for decades!

You're over thinking it

As long as you don't already have a William and a George (and your surname isn't Windsor) there is no reason for people to associate his name with the Royals

FlySwimmer · 12/09/2022 16:57

Well since the new king is called Charles, not Charlie, you’re way overthinking it.

BluePeppermint · 12/09/2022 16:59

Whew, that's great, thanks all!

Yeah it’s fine! I know loads of Elizabeths born when the queen was queen, henrys, georges, williams, Charlottes etc. Do it!

toastofthetown · 12/09/2022 17:21

Not at all. The name Charles has never left the England and Wales top hundred, though it’s currently declining. I see Charlie as a very different name. It’s more along the lines of Albie/Freddie/Reggie/Teddy to me, -ie/-y diminutive as a full name than a royal name. Charlie is significantly more popular than Charles also.

WhoppingBigBackside · 12/09/2022 19:48

Charles on the BC in case he ends up being a High Court Judge. Maybe Philip Arthur George, or Rex, as middle names.

caitlinrose · 12/09/2022 19:57

No, I think of Charlie in the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory book and movie.

I have never associated Charlie with the royal family at all. Isn't he just know as Charles? I never heard anyone call him Charlie.

I prefer Charles with the nickname Charlie instead of just Charlie, but Charlie is nice too!

Good luck!

To be brutally frank OP, I don’t think many parents would consider naming their sons Charles just because Prince Charles has become King.
Charles has been in constant use for the past 500 years and is a good strong traditional name.
Good luck and enjoy your little Charlie

NO! My cousin recently gave birth to a Charlie, fits this boy perfectly (can be girls name) and never is he called Charles.
