My 3 year daughter is obsessed with calling our unborn baby Emily (we don’t know where she got the name from!). My husband now thinks this is a great name with a great story i.e. our daughter picked it. But I can’t help but think it sounds odd with our surname. The baby would be Emily Mallory if it’s a girl.

if it’s a boy, I like Max Mallory but worry the alliteration might make it sound a bit odd too.

Do you think these names sound ok or do you agree with me they sound a bit odd?

I don't think they sound odd. 'Emily' or 'Max' wouldn't be my first choice of names but there's nothing actually wrong with them. Having said that, I don't see why you should be bound by your DD's choice if there is another name you'd prefer.

Redkat11 · 11/09/2022 01:24

I think Max Mallory sounds great. Loving the alliteration. I know what you mean, it sounds a bit like Milly Mallory but I think Emily Mallory does sound nice or Emma as a variant.

BestCatMumEver · 11/09/2022 07:10

I don’t think they go together at all. The sounds are too similar.

Agree with a pp though, you’re not bound by what your DD thinks, she’s 3!

RuthW · 11/09/2022 07:59

Emily Mallory does not sound good.

Luredbyapomegranate · 11/09/2022 12:34

Emily Mallory - I don’t mind it, but agree it’s not the best - just use it as a middle name, because I agree it’s a sweet story.

I think alliteration can be fine, but Max Mallory does sound like a 1930s showman so I’d find something else

YouSoundLovely · 11/09/2022 12:40

Agree Emily Mallory doesn't flow well on its own, but it's a lovely name and a wonderful way to help your dd feel involved and included by using it as a middle name. I would probably use it as a first middle name and add another, e.g. (picking other names at random) Ava Emily Beatrice Mallory.

Mummytobe333 · 11/09/2022 16:05

I don’t see an issue with the surname at all 😊

Snowiscold · 11/09/2022 16:10

Emily Mallory doesn’t work, but Max Mallory is fine for a boy. Emilia, Amelia, Emma are similar and work better, though the first two are a bit of a mouthful. I don’t think it’s right that your dd picks the name, though. It’s a bit insulting for a younger sibling -that a toddler picked their name.

Skiingwithgin · 11/09/2022 16:21

I’d take Emily over what my toddler wants to call our baby: Tesco.

every single time I ask her what to call the baby her answer is Tesco!

how about Emilia? Close but not as rhymey

mathanxiety · 11/09/2022 16:50

Get DD a doll named Emily.

Start again on the girl names. Avoid sing songy EE endings before Mallory.

Max Mallory is very nice.

Mumofgirls2017 · 11/09/2022 22:08

I like Max Mallory but Emily Mallory is a bit of a mouthful sorry!

DuchessOfSausage · 13/09/2022 17:02

Nothing wrong with Emily but it doesn't go with the surname. Neither do Emilia or Amelia, or Amelie. Even if you add a middle name, she'll still be Emily Mallory in day-to-day life.

Emma Mallory is better but it's a bit too close to mammary.

Your 3 yr old should not be choosing the name.
