Full Name Vs Nickname

When did you or when will you introduce your child to their full name if you called them by their nickname from birth? I'm thinking of names where the shortened/nickname sounds quite different to the full name, e.g. Betty/Elizabeth, Teddy/Edward

I just mix mine up, sometimes full name and sometimes nick name - works fine

I never really ‘introduced’ my kids to their name. They always knew ‘mummy calls me Tommy, it’s short for Thomas which is my name.’ When learning to write their names we taught them to write their full proper name.

This.
Sammy as a navy became Sam at nursery and first school.
He chose to be Samuel at Middle and High school, but remains Sam at home and Sammy to Granny.

Iv given my daughters names that cannot be shortened. Obviously in future I'm expecting the at nicknames or pet names will come in; but for now their names are what I want them to be 🤣

I would use both interchangeably as much aa possible, my ‘always known as her nickname’ sister arrived at school not knowing her proper name, and got very confused when her peg had a different name on the label. Came home asking my mum ‘mummy why do they keep saying my name starts with an a?’

EdithGrantham · 10/09/2022 11:13

Thanks all! @BuffaloCauliflower that's my concern, as a teacher I've seen this so many times, we usually ask the parents what the child is known as and which name they want on their peg etc but the worst one was where the parents hadn't realised their child only knew their pet name of Mouse and had no idea at all that wasn't her real name!

My son is 2 and recognises his full name and nickname. Never really introduced it, just call him a mix day to day.

I have always been known as the shortened version of my full first name, full name really doesn't feel like my name. I've always known what my "proper" name is but no one ever used it. I don't remember being told about it, just something I had on official forms and school registers when I was a kid I guess

SpaceJamtart · 13/09/2022 14:33

My parents didn't tell me that my name was actually a nickname for another name.
Its not a natural shortening think Pearl from Margaret rather than Eliza from Elizabeth.
I went to school and didn't understand why everyone called me the 'wrong' name.

If its a weird shortening I'd try and teach them it fom the beginning- have it written on stuff so they have seen it and can feel like that is their name too.
But if its an easy one like Sam from Samuel, I would just make sure they know before they have to get called it at school
