Which Boys Name??????

Chunkamatic · 23/01/2008 12:05

Hello, this is my first time starting a post on here...

I am 36 weeks and am fairly convinced the bump is going to be a boy. We have spent 7 months agonising over boys names and have come up with a choice of 2....

Gene or Ned.

if we go for ned we would possibly call him edward but use ned.

Which one is nicest (and least cruel?!)

Thanks
x

not Gene, Ned and Edward on birth cert.

McDreamy · 02/02/2008 20:59

A Ned vote here

Wilkie · 02/02/2008 20:59

Ned - Gene not nice (sorry)

I was convinced I was having a girl and out popped a boy! Be prepared!

I quite like Gene

ItsPotatoesForYouMyLad · 03/02/2008 20:48

Edward or Ned are lovely
Gene just makes me think of gene hunt since 'life on mars' and no-one wants a name that rhymes with hunt surely.

Chunkamatic · 04/02/2008 10:21

Thanks for all your responses thus far - You have been really helpful.

It's interesting that nobody really like the name Gene, Can anybody tell me what factors make Gene an undesirable name ?

why Is it really that awful ???

Ned

I like Gene (love Gene Wilder and Gene Kelly) but Jean is rising in popularity for girls so when he is older he may end up in the same position as the boys called Taylor and Jordan. (only slightly more middle class). I don't think that that is a good enough reason to discount it though if you really like it.

HonoriaGlossop · 04/02/2008 10:57

Edward/Ned is lovely

belgo · 04/02/2008 11:04

I don't like Gene.

Edward is lovely.

ItsPotatoesForYouMyLad · 04/02/2008 18:57

difficult to say exactly why you don't like a name chunky, for me Gene isn't a v 'strong' name for a boy. i definately see it more as a girls name.

but you should totally go with YOUR OWN preference and don't let anyone put you off. ime, you soon get used to a name and can't see lo as anything else in no time

devonsmummy · 04/02/2008 20:26

another vote for Ned

Don't like Gene - went to school with a Gene and he was forever getting his leg pulled over having a girls name

SnappyLaGore · 04/02/2008 20:28

i wanted Ned (but not edward especially... what oin earth else can Ned be short for??)

i love Ned.

dont like Gene.

SnappyLaGore · 04/02/2008 20:29

its not awful per se... dunno why i dont like it. didnt analyse, just went on got reaction.

Chunkamatic · 04/02/2008 20:52

It's so hard!! In some respects I really dont care if no one else likes the name we choose, but I dont want to make life intolerable for the wee one later on!!!

We were slightly concerned about the girly factor with Gene so it's interesting that it has been mentioned... but i'm just hoping that with all the weird and wonderful names out there nowadays there might be a kid in the playground with a name more worth picking on than Gene!! Ha ha

I like Gene (short for Eugene surely??). I suppose being a less common name over here could be a problem with people thinking his name is Jean . In America he'd be fine so if the taunting got really bad you could possibly emigrate . tbh, I think his peers at school are going to have some weird and wonderful names anyway so it's possible no-one will take much notice.

I have known a few Neds and they were all errr..not my cup of tea exactly so that taints the name a bit for me. One was actually a Niall, I can;t remember the other's 'proper' name.

Then there is Ned Seagoon of 'The Goons' fame, if you call him Ned you'd best hope that there is not Goon Show revival in his lifetime

DforDiva · 04/02/2008 20:54

thumb up for Ned
lovely name.

BigBadMouse · 04/02/2008 20:55

x post 'weird and wonderful names' - great minds think alike . Gene is a very manly name is the USA you know.

ItsPotatoesForYouMyLad · 04/02/2008 21:00

when you're teaching little Gene to spell and write his name it won't be phonic and will be that bit harder. However, it's by no means the only non-phonic name and no reason not to choose it.

rachaelsara · 04/02/2008 21:06

Check initals with your surname. Our surname is a T so, for instance, a daughter called Sophie Hanna Imogen would never do....

rachaelsara · 04/02/2008 21:07

Or Tarquin William Arnold.

Chunkamatic · 04/02/2008 21:24

Well, the surname/initials issue is a whole other subject!!! Our surname begins with O'D.... so initials would potentially be G.O'D.

Is that just really cruel??? DH thinks it is reason a lone to choose a name that begins with G!!!

Gene is just really really bad - can't work out why - but no, no, no!

Love Ned though - I do know one - an absolutely lovely little lad
