With the terribly sad passing of Queen Elizabeth II, do you think we will see a rise in babies called Elizabeth or Lilibet?
I have to say I'm particularly fond of Lilibet!

My money's on yes we will.

toastofthetown · 09/09/2022 20:36

Elizabeth is the only girls name to never drop out of the top hundred since records began in 1904. Maybe a small uptick in Elizabeth, but I can’t see this being the start of a trend. Names chosen by Kate had a small moment then went back to what they were doing anyway, and I can’t see much of a change in that for Elizabeth. Personally, I’d avoid using Elizabeth this year in case someone thought I was an ardent royalist (though I’d consider using it otherwise).

Lilibet is quite clunky sounding and doesn’t have much mass appeal, and if someone called their child Elizabeth in the next year, I’d assume they were on the same level as the person who called into This Morning a few weeks ago saying they were still devastated by Princess Diana’s death.

NuffSaidSam · 09/09/2022 20:39

Elizabeth is a great name, but I don't think there are that many people so upset by the passing of the Queen that they'll name their baby after her.

I think almost all new baby Elizabeth's would have been called that anyway.

Umbrellabee · 09/09/2022 21:03

DH and I were talking about this earlier as we have an Elizabeth. We think there might be a small increase. I don’t think it would be because of people being upset though, I think people will just hear the name a lot and realise what a great name it is!

DelphiniumBlue · 09/09/2022 21:08

I was surprised that there were very few babies named after Diana.. after 12 years teaching, I've only met one Diana, and she is primary age now. I would have expected some of DCs contemporaries to be called Diana, but no, not a single one. So who knows if Elizabeth will become popular!

mum2jakie · 09/09/2022 22:02

Maybe some of the other diminutives might have a resurgence? Betty/Betsy/Beth/Eliza and the like?

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 09/09/2022 22:17

I'd guess maybe a tiny jump next year, possibly up a couple of places, simply because constantly hearing a name sometimes keeps it in peoples thoughts when potential baby name discussions come up (and unlike more uncommon Diana, popular Elizabeth isn't as quite so obviously reminiscent of one person, so perhaps feels more easy to use).

However as a pp said, Elizabeth has never been left the most popular names historically (since records were kept from around the 1300's I think) till today. It's the only girls name in English records that never leaves- so for good reasons I think it'll continue to stay popular (can't tell Elizabeth's age/background, many great/interesting namesakes and the most nickname options of any name out there). But equally I can't see it hitting the top 20 or anything - Elizabeth doesn't really fit the most popular name trends currently.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 09/09/2022 22:19

Oh and Lilibet definitely not imo - too obviously royal links. For Elizabeth, you could more easily deny if wanted.

Luredbyapomegranate · 09/09/2022 22:54

Elizabeth as a middle name maybe. It’s popular as a first anyway

Lilibet - I fucking hope not

They are all already v popular though

Ikeameatballs · 09/09/2022 23:06

I think, as others have said, Elizabeth may rise slightly but not massively. I strongly dislike Lilibet.

ElvisLeftTheBuilding · 09/09/2022 23:09

I don't think Lilibet will become popular. Partly because it's known as the queen's nickname rather than an actual name, and partly I think people will be put off by Harry and Meghan's using it.
Elizabeth, yes I think particularly the next year beginning now will see a spike in popularity. It's a great name!
I also think Charles will have a little popularity boost for boys.

LemonsOnSaleAgain · 09/09/2022 23:11

Will there be more Camillas?

jrt2022 · 10/09/2022 14:04

There are millions of Elizabeths anyway, I doubt we'd notice an increase.

Cindie943811A · 10/09/2022 20:14

The Queenreportedly wasn’t fond of her nn Lilibet — or maybe she just wanted to keep its use confined to very close family and friends who had known her when she was young.
If this was the case, no doubt she would have been displeased when Harry and Meghan called their daughter Lilibet.
So far Lilibet doesn’t appear to have “caught on”, at least in the UK, but give it time and it will lose any exclusiveness it had.

wibblewobbleball · 10/09/2022 20:23

We have an Elizabeth who is under 5. When we named her we discussed there might be a surge of Elizabeths if the Queen was to die. Whilst it's still a "popular" name, I haven't known another baby be called it in the last 10 years and there are none amongst my DDs peer group.

I've always liked the name Camilla, but I think if it had been going to surge in popularity due to Charles's wife it would have happened in 2005 when they married.

felulageller · 10/09/2022 20:49

I think there will be more Charles's over the coming years.

Wouldloveanother · 10/09/2022 20:50

Yes I think there will be. And it’s use as a middle name, which was very popular in the 90s - everyone’s middle name was Elizabeth or Louise!

MedbN · 21/09/2022 15:52

If you knew a baby born in the next two-ish weeks and named Elizabeth would you automatically think named after the queen?

caitlinrose · 21/09/2022 18:03

Elizabeth - yes, but only a slight rise. It has been around for a long time and everyone's aware of it already so it's not like some parents who have never thought of it will recover it. However, some people may rediscover it in a way. But I don't think it will have a huge impact, maybe it will rise 5-10 spots and then remain there.

Lilibet - no, because it's too much of a one-person-name and has too strong an association. Some people will use it but I doubt it will chart. I think Lily is already losing popularity so maybe if it had been discovered 10 years ago or so it could have caught on but now people seem to look for different names.

I actually love the name Diana, but the royal connection is the main reason I will avoid it, I wouldn't want to be mistaken for a royal/Diana obsessive! (also can't stand the nickname Di).

Airymanning · 22/09/2022 22:27

We just had a new baby in family called Elizabeth -yesterday

Yes

lannistunut · 22/09/2022 22:29

Lilibet is embarrassing if you have no links to the Queen.
