Can’t pick a girls name!

SGChome20 · 06/09/2022 20:08

I’m due in a couple of weeks and we can’t decide on a girls name. We have a boys name picked out already which likely means I’m having a girl!

names we like so far are:

Emma - worry it’s a bit bland
Rachael
Martha
Melissa - don’t really want it shortened to Mel

I also like Darcy, Megan and Erin but DH doesn’t like them. I liked Victoria but was out off by it likely being shortened to Vicki. I don’t like anything that sounds like a nickname and I’m not keen on names ending ie but wouldn’t rule it out completely. I don’t really want anything too popular but equally nothing too out there either. We already have a Grace and at the time I didn’t realise quite how popular it was but I do like her name and she really has become her name.

Any suggestions are welcome.

I really like Emma actually, it’s a classic like Grace, they go well, and less common than Emilia these days

Rachel is quite nice too.

Not mad about the others - Martha is a biblical kitchen drudge and Melissa is a bit 80s and insubstantial

maybe..

Miranda
Marianne
Marina
Vivienne
Viola
Violet
Cassia
Saskia
Adela
Jocelyn
Elsbeth
Elowen
Ellen
Alexandra nn Alix or Sacha

SGChome20 · 06/09/2022 20:36

Elowen is really nice and not one I’ve come across. I liked Elsbeth as well but DH didn’t.

I like Emma, I don’t think there are many these days. Same goes for another name that i’d put in the same category - Lucy (although I know you’re not keen on ie names).

How about:
Grace and Greta
Grace and Ayla
Grace and Violet

Emma is beautiful. Not my style of names but I actually think grace and Emma sound lively and classic together. It’s unusual aswell for children nowadays I think. I’ve also never met an Emma who I didn’t like.

resm · 06/09/2022 20:43

Emma goes really well with Grace. I also really love Martha from your list, but think Emma is my favourite. It’s classic and I don’t think it’s too common nowadays.

Yika · 06/09/2022 20:46

These are four lovely names, you could pick one at random and wouldn't go wrong. Emma is a wonderful name and very classic.

Some good suggestions on here for alternatives. Thank you. Maybe Emma isn’t too bland after all right enough!

Love Martha! Don't really like the others but Emma is okay.

DurdleSnore · 08/09/2022 12:14

Grace and Martha.

Personally, I feel Rachel and Melissa are dated.

Emily? Prefer this to Emma and it goes nicely with Grace. Pretty and traditional.

Riverlee · 08/09/2022 12:24

Firstly, you don’t have to decide until baby is born.. Sometimes when you see them, the name just fits, and sometimes one will come to you that wasn’t even on your list.

Emily or Emmaline instead of Emma?
Rebecca instead of Rachel?
Martha sounds great with Grace
Melissa - uncommon amongst this generation

Why don’t you wait until you meet the baby?! I had names provisionally picked out for DC1, but when she arrived she didn’t suit the girls name we’d settled on and we ended up giving her a different name. DC2 wasn’t named for about a week…

Flockameanie · 08/09/2022 12:30

Cross post with @Riverlee ! The name DD ended up with was one I’d never even thought about or considered. It came to me when I was breastfeeding her on about day 3 and staring, in an exhausted stupor, at the spines of the books on my bookcase. It suits her perfectly and I’m glad I didn’t feel committed to a name chosen before she was born

minticecreamisjustok · 08/09/2022 12:33

Emma is nice but if it's too bland, what about Emilia or Emily.

halfsiesonapotnoodle · 08/09/2022 12:34

Emma and Rachael are dull, dull, dull. Avoid! I do like Martha. Cassia would be nice.

StarlingsInTheRoof · 08/09/2022 12:53

I have been on holiday to a few countries with an Emma and it was easy for people from all the different languages to pronounce. Definitely a plus point in global society.

RosieRoww · 08/09/2022 12:55

Emma is a nice name, not bland, op.:)

numberthirtytwowindsorgardens · 08/09/2022 13:42

Emma and Rachael are beautiful. Also second Hannah, suggested upthread.

Melissa is also lovely, but don't use it if you don't like Mel - she will definitely be called that at some point in her life!

bloominglovelyorange · 08/09/2022 13:47

Emma is such a nice classic and beautiful name

HarleySq · 08/09/2022 19:45

Elizabeth would be quite pertinent.

SGChome20 · 08/09/2022 19:59

@HarleySq i actually always have liked the name Elizabeth and I’m sure it may have a resurgence now. I was just put off by Lizzy, Betty, Liz shortenings.

OP posts:
HarleySq · 08/09/2022 22:23

Eliza?

catandcoffee · 08/09/2022 22:26

Zara.... you cant really shorten it.

Notateacheranymore · 08/09/2022 22:27

Elise is an attractive variant.
