@COL1N , but how do you say Or and La? Smile

EarringsandLipstick · 07/09/2022 10:29

Or some add phantom Rs and render it Or-ler. I don't like those pronunciations.

So many people with British accents do this. I work in a university in Ireland,, lots of well-to-do British accents here & they seem to be the worst!

(But I'm well-aware I get it wrong with names from other countries too, by the same token).

Fleur405 · 07/09/2022 10:32

I know a few here in Scotland but we do roll our Rs without adding random ones so (I think!) pronounce it correctly. Agree that if you live somewhere it would be pronounced Orlar that wouldn’t be so good.

Fleur405 · 07/09/2022 10:32

But I do like it a lot.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 07/09/2022 10:35

I think it's lovely, and it travels well as long as you stick to Orla. Orfhlaith would be stricty for domestic usage!

Mummytobe333 · 07/09/2022 11:22

Orla is a gorgeous name I love it! 💓😊 however is super popular just now. Was 23rd most popular name where I stay last year. But I do think it’s beautiful.

LizzieAnt · 07/09/2022 14:16

Strictly speaking there is a fada on the 'o'.

So Órla or Órlaith.

I know many people don't use the fada, especially outside Ireland, but just thought I should mention it at this point in the conversation😁

Samzzz · 07/09/2022 19:57

I like it but it's becoming very popular. Not sure of that's matters to you.

thelastgreatdynasty · 07/09/2022 20:01

I'm in the minority here, but I really don't like it. It reminds me of oral :-/

Most people in Ireland don't use it either. Know loads of Orla's, never seen a fada, tho I appreciate the sound indicates one should be there.

shivawn · 07/09/2022 21:08

I live in Ireland and have met tons of people called Orla, never seen any of them use a fada.

LizzieAnt · 07/09/2022 21:25

@EarringsandLipstick @shivawn

Yes, it often isn't used here either I know (though I do have a friend with the name who is very protective of her fada😊) Just checked the stats and in the last three years there were almost 3 times as many babies called Orla rather than Órla, and twice as many called Orlaith rather than Órlaith. Then, of course, there are people that mightn't use the fada day-to-day even though it's on their birth cert. People still pronounce the name as if the fada were there, which is good because in this case the fada does change the meaning of the word.

Personally I think it's a pity not to use it in Ireland at least, but obviously loads of people disagree with me!

This year's Ottilie.

Exactly this. Both pretty names but Orla is v common now. I do love it though so go for it if you do!

hittheroadjackk · 07/09/2022 21:52

Aliya
Melia (again kind of)

Daisybuttercup12345 · 07/09/2022 23:18

Too much like Oral.

SnooozyTree · 07/09/2022 23:25

Dd was almost an Orla, but I couldn't handle the way my DH pronounces it 🙄And he can't pronounce it my way (the right way🤔🤔)

We're both Irish, but have completely different 'or' pronunciations for Orla

powershowerforanhour · 07/09/2022 23:29

Pointless unless you have a rhotic accent.

ChagSameachDoreen · 08/09/2022 04:01

Orla is beautiful.

Oonagh/Oona is incredibly ugly. Not even in the same league.

EL8888 · 08/09/2022 06:58

I like it but my fiancé isn’t convinced. It matches my Irish surname very well so l am going to continue working on him!

Lmes · 10/09/2022 17:05

Orla means golden princess which is lovely. Unfortunately the meaning of orla in Hebrew would put me off and also oral .
My friend called her daughter Ornagh which is also beautiful .

FionaMacCool · 10/09/2022 17:43

Was just coming on to offer Orna, as an alternative, Lmes.
