Elliott - Boys name - will it get shortened?

Hi, I like Elliott for a boy's name but wondering if it's highly likely it will get shortened as he gets older? Does anyone have or know of any Elliott's/Elliot's and whether this has naturally happened or whether they are just known as their full name to friends and family? Thank you. I would prefer it not to be shortened personally.

I know a few of varying ages - none are ever shortened except perhaps the occasional "Ellie" in jest.

Kanaloa · 04/09/2022 13:39

The Elliotts/Elliots I’ve known have all just used their full name. I guess it could be shortened to E.J or some other initial name, but I think it’s nice as it is.

My stepbrother is called Eliot; everyone used to call him Eli up until when he left school. When he was an older teen he preferred his full name and I don’t think anyone calls him Eli now (he’s early 30s). It’s quite a sweet nickname though I think.

Kerrrmieee · 04/09/2022 13:43

I've known a few Elliott's (back in the 80s/90s) I've never known the name to be shortened.

I want to watch ET now 😭

MissingNashville · 04/09/2022 13:51

We know 2 Elliots, both sometimes get called El.

GoldenGorilla · 04/09/2022 13:52

I know two, both always called full name.

Sofia1981 · 04/09/2022 13:58

Thank you so much. That's reassuring. It's the one element that's putting me off & I'll have little control over it as he grows up & don't know any myself to ask, so thank you. I think it's a lovely standalone name xx

Even if you did know some to ask, I don't think it would really help you. I know one Elliot who doesn't use a nickname and one who uses El most of the time. But as you know that there are nicknames and you have no control over whether he'll want to use them or not, then the answer has to be decided by if the diminutives are a dealbreaker or not.

Luredbyapomegranate · 04/09/2022 20:24

I know a couple of grown up ones and it wasn't.

But I guess with all the Elijah / Elis, you might get Eli these days

Lilacsunflowers · 04/09/2022 20:27

I know an Elliot known as Elly

Googlecanthelpme · 04/09/2022 20:29

Pretty much every name with more than one syllable gets shortened by friends / family at some point or another!

Elliot is likely to get El shouted at him by mates, much like we shortened Laura to Law, Leanne to Lee, Kelly to Kel, Danny to Dan, Tony to Tone, and so on and so on.

It was generally only ever at school and not usually in conversation, more like when you’re screaming up the stairs for them to hurry up!

It wouldn’t be likely to be shortened in school and if you want family to use full name then just make sure you’re clear about it. But you can’t really control what friends or school mates etc might use.

Sofia1981 · 04/09/2022 21:10

Thanks. I understand it's hard to control unless you have a name like Jack for example that can't be shortened. I think naively I thought it was a name that couldn't be (!) until I researched a bit. I love Oliver but every Oliver I know (about 8) is Ollie and it's enough for me not to like the name anymore. So I was just wondering is Elliott was the same but it seems a bit more hit/miss which I think I accept more.

My son's middle name is Elliot and one of the reasons why we didn't choose it for a first name was because of the lack of shortened names. We picked one that can be easily shortened.

I have since met an Elliot and he was the biggest twat I have ever known. So I am glad that my son did not share a name with this fuckwit.

familyissues12345 · 04/09/2022 21:18

I know two (aged 10-12), both are called El

Louise0701 · 04/09/2022 21:19

I know 4 Elliotts / Elliot’s. They’re all Ell.

Livpool · 04/09/2022 21:20

I know a couple usually e called 'EL'.

Most names are shortened

Louise0701 · 04/09/2022 21:20

@Sofia1981 my sister chose Jack for that reason. He is known as J by all his friends 😂

bowchicawowwow · 04/09/2022 21:28

I find that if you can't shorten it, people lengthen it instead. The only Elliott I know goes by El.

ODFOx · 04/09/2022 21:43

Single T first name.
Double T surname.
Not usually shortened.

Lilacsunflowers · 04/09/2022 22:24

El sounds like Elle, 'She' in French.

CornishGem1975 · 04/09/2022 22:26

The one I know, it gets shortened to El.

stitchinguru · 04/09/2022 22:30

My Ellis was sometime El and quite often Big E.
Its one of those things thats out of your control - and does it really matter anyway?

Bumpsadaisie · 04/09/2022 22:32

SparkyBlue · 05/09/2022 11:15
