I want to honour my dads mum who I never met “Vera” in my daughter name. I don’t like it as a first name tho

Would Veronica be a good alternative? Or Verity? I don’t know if they have the same roots but they have similar sounds.

KirstenBlest · 30/08/2022 21:22

Use it as a middle name. I know a couple of really nice Veras, but Vera Duckworth ruined the name

Mumofgirls2017 · 30/08/2022 21:23

Victoria
veronica
verity

could have middle name starting with A for verity

Hobbesmanc · 30/08/2022 21:43

Vera and Verity share the same origin from the Latin for truth. So Verity would work. But if you want to pay homage to babies grandmother just use it as a middle. I have a really naff family middle name which I never use.

Use Vera as a first or middle name, or accept you are not honouring this woman.

Otherwise it comes off like "I'm honouring Vera, but that is such a ghastly name I couldn't possibly use it, so I found I name I do like with a tenuous connection that isn't Vera at all, but aren't I wonderful for honouring my deceased grandmother".

Sorry posted too soon! I meant to say I don't agree with that comment at all! And I find the tone spiteful and unnecessary.

People can name people after other people with similar sounding names. It's meaningful to them and their families. Lots of names come from other names. A grandchild can be named for a grandparent yet be called a shortening or a different version (like Jack was a version of John etc). In fact this used to be a very common way of doing things. I think the above comment strikes me as mean and unnecessary because it's trying to belittle your aims in wishing to honour/remember someone in your family as if it's just about making yourself look good. For goodness sake - look good to who? People on mumsnet? Those posters are being ridiculous. Noone outside the family is going to know. What matters is what it means to you and your family.

If you don't like the name Vera as it's not a name of the moment (and it is very old-fashioned) I think it's fine and nice to go with something similar that is still naming your child for her. Verity works well and is more contemporary and the same name in a different form. Verena is also nice and I think comes from the same meaning too. If you don't like these then use Vera for a middle name. Just ignore the mean posters on here.

DuchessOfSausage · 31/08/2022 11:37

@Hadtocomment , that's just your opinion.

Vera is not old-fashioned, as it happens - it's not used much but probably because parents are opting for a longer version on the BC
names.darkgreener.com/#vera shows a rising trend.

Agreed you either honour her or you dont
