Can you rank these names for me please? And if you have the time tell me what you like/dislike about them?

Esther

SoftSheen · 30/08/2022 21:30

Esther and Genevieve are both great choices.

Dorothy and Sylvia both OK, but I really dislike Mercy!

Esther NN Essie
Mercy
Dorothy
Genevieve NN Ginny
Silvia

FuncaMunca · 30/08/2022 21:36

Question: do people in the UK pronounce Genevieve as jen-a-veeve or the French way, jeanne-vee-ev?

45mumof6 · 30/08/2022 21:39

Love Dorothy, Genevieve is also pretty don't really like the other ones

Lulibee · 30/08/2022 21:41

Would you want any of these names as an adult? I certainly wouldn’t.

megosaurusrex · 30/08/2022 21:44

Favourite to least favourite:

Esther (lovely name)
Genevieve
Dorothy
Mercy
Silvia (really, really dislike this name - sounds way too much like "saliva")

MintyBubbles · 30/08/2022 21:50

Silvia then Genevieve. Not keen on the others.

Matildahoney · 30/08/2022 21:59

@FuncaMunca most people say gennaveeve, I knew someone whose girlfriend was pronounced Jonviev though and think it sounds much nicer.

mscampbelle · 30/08/2022 22:27

I LOVE Sylvia or Sylvie

What an odd question. I know adults with all of these names. They're not at all babyish - if anything, they seem a little too 'adult' to imagine on a tiny baby!

They are all horrible , sorry it wouldn't matter which order !

allow · 31/08/2022 05:31

Mercy - setting them up for a lifetime of being accused of not having any.

StartupRepair · 31/08/2022 05:43

Sylvia (with that spelling)
Esther
Genevieve
Mercy
All lovely names.
Not mad on Dorothy.

UsernameIsHarderThanBabyName · 01/09/2022 16:39

Esther
Sylvia
Dorothy
Genevieve
Mercy

I like them all, except Mercy

Titsflyingsouth · 01/09/2022 21:33

I'm not massively sold on any of them tbh

Genevieve is OK.
Sylvie is nice, less keen on Sylvia and even less keen on Silvia.

I cannot put into words how much I loathe Esther. Sounds really frumpy and ugly to my ears.

lovebabynames · 01/09/2022 22:49

Don't listen to people saying Dorothy is an old women's name, names work on a cycle and by the time she reaches school, none of the other children will think its an 'old lady name'

georgarina · 02/09/2022 10:36

I've always loved Genevieve - seen it on a lot of people's lists but it's beautiful

Not too keen on Esther and Mercy - just sound v religious

Not keen on Dorothy - sounds old-ladyish to me

Silvia is also quite plain to me as it's a very common and quite old fashioned Latin/South American name

FayCarew · 02/09/2022 10:43

Dorothy: is on an upward trend

catsonahottinroof · 02/09/2022 10:45

I like: Genevieve (could use Jenny as a nn)
Dorothy (or Dorothea is nice nn Thea)
Silvia (ok but prefer Sylvia or Sylvie)
I don't like Esther or Mercy (not sure why - just don't like the sounds/associations

Fivebeanchilli · 02/09/2022 11:02

Dorothy is my top choice. I have to laugh at the people saying it's hideous and old lady or "might be due a comeback". It's well and truly back. It's the Mabel and Edith of the last couple of years. I don't know any Mabels or Ediths under 7 (but lots between 7 and 13) and people still act on Mumsnet as though they're very radical and daring. Dorothy is pretty popular in our area for the under 5s. It's also very pretty.

Silvia would probably be my second choice shortly Sylvia but I dislike the Silvia spelling.

Genevieve - I like but I so much prefer the French pronunciation that I wouldn't use it in England. Jen - uh - veev sounds so frumpy.

Esther - it's ok. For some reason it feels soppy to me. I love Hester though and that would jump to the top of the list if you chose that.

Mercy - I don't like many virtue names but this one is particularly mealy -mouthed in my view. Really don't like it.
