Thoughts on these?
Cordelia
Cecily - I like how this looks, but not keen on pronunciation
Dorothea - prefer it to Dorothy
Callista - bunch of ways to spell it, and prefer Kallista spelling, but worry it looks wrong in any way of spelling it
Amethyst - with nickname Amy, I like Amy, but it's too short for me and prefer Amethyst anyway
Charlotte - love it despite popularity, due to Sorrows of Young Werther associations
Giselle - can't find middle that sounds the best
Romilly - with nickname Milly. I like Romilly as full name, but like other names more

I sort of think of Anne Of Green Gables, that type of thing, when I see / hear these names. That may be what you’re going for, though!

frenchie4002 · 29/08/2022 17:45

LOVE Romilly and Cordelia

Luredbyapomegranate · 29/08/2022 18:50

I’d go for Cordelia - lovely strong name
or failing that Dorothea - also elegant
I also like Cecily

Kallista spelling does look odd, but I much prefer Cassia anyway

Amethyst is OK, but Amy is v dull

Charlotte it is nice but utterly done to death - middle name?

Giselle - NOOOOOoooo Apart from the fact it sounds terrible in many UK accents- Jizz - going to be a nightmare as a teen

Romilly is alright but not very distinguished, and there are a million Millys

Yika · 29/08/2022 19:12

Callista / Kallista is just lovely.

i also like Romilly, and maybe Dorothea.

They all sound quite arty / bohemian / literary.

Not very keen on Cecily which sounds a bit wet. I prefer Celia even if it’s a bit grannyish.

MrsSamR · 29/08/2022 19:20

I love Cordelia - I would have had it for my 2nd DD (1st daughter is Ophelia...can you see a pattern?!) but my husband wasn't keen!

I really like Cecily.

Don't like Giselle or Callista or Amethyst. I suppose I wonder if it would be hard to have these kinds of names. I don't really see the point of calling someone Amethyst/Amy because Amy is a name already so they will just be called that. Giselle just seems so associated with ballet to me. Of the others Dorothy/thea is growing on me. There's a kind of Victorian vibe and an early-mid twentieth century vibe, so I feel I can imagine lots of different people being able to inhabit these names. Dorothea is a very long name, though, and may be always Thea which feels quite different. Dorothy might have more of a chance of being called it.

Cindie943811A · 29/08/2022 21:20

I find Amethyst a bit of a tongue twister.
I prefer Cecelia or even Cecile to Cecily which sounds weak and wet ( like Cecil) and like the couple I’ve known.
Dorothea is nice but the diminutive Thea is rather ugly.
Romillyand Cordelia would be my favourites.
What about Cassandra, which seems similar in some ways

blameitonthecaffeine · 29/08/2022 21:29

What a lovely list!

Cordelia - possibly a bit frilly but pretty.
Cecily - I never know if this is Sess-illy or Siss-illy or whether Cecily and Cicely are two different names. Not overly keen either way though.
Dorothea - I also prefer it to Dorothy but don't especially like it.
Callista - I think it might be Calista with a single l? Does that look better to you? I think it's very pretty, anyway.
Amethyst - I've never heard this as a name but it's pretty yet strong. And I love Amy.
Charlotte - love it. I know it's popular but it's beautiful and all Charlottes I know are lovely people.
Giselle - love it. So elegant, makes me think of ballerinas.
Romilly - really like this too. Prefer Romy as a nickname to Milly.

Other names that I think fit well with your list are:
Acacia
Calliope
Jacinta
Ramona
Cassandra
Genevieve
Cecelia

Merryclaire · 30/08/2022 06:48

Cordelia - strong name, though a lot of people will assume named after Buffy character rather than from Lear, if that will annoy you. 4 syllables so will be Cordy or Delia
Cecily - has ‘silly’ in it. Celia much nicer
Dorothea - too long so will always be shortened to Dot, Dotty or (best case scenario) Thea
Callista - a nice name and Calli sounds ok for short
Amethyst - Amy is a good name but think Amethyst sounds very try hard
Charlotte - lovely classic name
Giselle - will be shortened to Gis (Jizz) and cause lots of horrible teasing
Romilly - yes, very nice with with Milly or Romy as nn.

EleanorShellstrop28 · 30/08/2022 08:20

Cordelia - I used to dislike - couldn't get past the 'cord' sound which made me imagine an umbilical cord for some reason. But it's growing on me.
Cecily - Lovely
Dorothea - Lovely
Callista - Don't love this. It sounds like a product to me.
Amethyst - Gemstone names sort of say 'stripper' to me, i'm sorry. I know that's a horrible comment, but it's true.
Charlotte - It's nice enough, if a little dull
Giselle - I'd not use any name that sounds like it has the word 'jizz' at the beginning if i'm honest
Romilly - Reminds me of Rommel. I like the nickname Romy though but not another Millie!

Like Cecily and Dorothea best.

DuchessOfSausage · 30/08/2022 08:25

Cordelia - like but it's long. Delia is nice
Cecily - too Cecil-y. Don't like the Cess sound
Dorothea - much prefer Dorothy
Callista - prefer Calista
Amethyst - too long and too crystally. Crystal meth
Charlotte - absolutely fine
Giselle - Jizz-elle
Romilly - I don't like it. Milly is a bit meh

TenThousandSpoons · 30/08/2022 08:33

Amethyst nn Amy has a completely different feel to the rest of your list. Agree with pp that Amethyst says stripper name to me. The nn doesn’t really work because Amy is the long a sound whereas Amethyst is the short vowel sound for a. People will think that you think Amethyst is pronounced Amy-this. Just Amy is lovely.

Giselle is a no no because of the jizz.

Charlotte is my favourite from your list.
The others aren’t my cup of tea (too long/frilly) but I’d choose Dorothea over Cordelia, Cecile or Romilly.

WaltzingWaters · 30/08/2022 08:38

Cordelia - don’t like at all.
Cecily - Completely agree with your thoughts. CiCi for short?
Dorothea - it’s okay.
Callista - I like it. Nn Cali?
Amethyst - don’t like it at all. Sounds a bit stripper/porn star (sorry).
Charlotte - lovely name but yeah, quite popular compared to the others here.
Giselle - pretty but not too sure
Romilly - think this is my favourite, though I’d go with Romy is a nn rather than Milly which is quite popular.

Hobbesmanc · 30/08/2022 11:00

Dorothy and Dorothea are fabulous names. Dory is a cute alternative to Dolly or Dottie.

I love the C names. Cecile is pretty and I love Celeste. Cecelia is so classical and Cissie or Cessie are good nick names. Cecily is so underused despite having noble pedigree.

I have a Charlotte niece. She suits it although she gets Lottie mainly.

PearlSupernova · 05/09/2022 16:45

Cordelia, Charlotte and Giselle are all on my list too!
I think Cordelia is my favourite (possibly with the nn Cora)
I agree Charlotte is very popular, but is still beautiful! Also agree that Giselle could have its challenges when a teenager.
How about: Odette, Aurelia, Alice, Gabrielle or Genevieve?

17caterpillars1mouse · 05/09/2022 21:17

Cordelia - beautiful name, I really like it. It's unusual but everybody knows it as a name, I really like the shortening a Cordy and Cory, not so keen on Delia though. I would love to meet a little Cordelia

Cecily - I really like it but prefer Cordelia

Dorothea - prefer it to Dorothy - gorgeous name but not so keen on the shortening s. I also love Dorothy

Callista - not a fan, though like that it can be shortened to Callie. K names always seem downmarket to me when they could be a C. Not sure why

Amethyst - with nickname Amy, I like Amy, but it's too short for me and prefer Amethyst anyway. I like it but it's not my favourite from your list. I like Amy too. What about spelling it Aimee so it seems longer?

Charlotte - it's nice but all the Charlotte's I know are known as Lottie which I don't like. I like Charley

Giselle - not a fan
Romilly - with nickname Milly. I like Milly but not Romilly. I like Millicent nn Milly.

Fivebeanchilli · 05/09/2022 22:35

Cordelia - love love love
Cecily - love this too. How about Cecilia or Cécile if you want a different sound?
Dorothea - love this
Callista - bunch of ways to spell it, and prefer Kallista spelling, but worry it looks wrong in any way of spelling it - I really like Calista. I prefer this spelling and then Callista. Not keen on K names.
Amethyst - with nickname Amy, I like Amy, but it's too short for me and prefer Amethyst anyway - really don't like Amethyst at all.
Charlotte - love it despite popularity, due to Sorrows of Young Werther associations - like Charlotte but prefer others on your list
Giselle - can't find middle that sounds the best - it's ok. Giselle Charlotte is pretty.
Romilly - with nickname Milly. I like Romilly as full name, but like other names more - it's ok. Your other names are much better.

Cordelia, Cecily and Dorothea are all perfect names!

Petrar · 05/09/2022 23:14

Dorothea is lovely name. Love ‘Dot’ too
