Has this name become too popular? Six years ago it was at the top of my list but now it’s time to name DD I worry it is everywhere

It is very popular at the moment - just outside the top 10 for this year. But it depends how much that bothers you really!

SizzlerFizzler · 27/08/2022 20:21

it's certainly soared in popularity and is probably still on the rise. But fewer than 2000 Elsies born in 2020 so it depends if that's too many for you.

It is everywhere. Feel like anywhere I go there’s an Elsie, school, shops, even today on holiday.

Not that keen on it personally.

WishDragon · 27/08/2022 21:34

Also, much prefer Elise.

KangarooKenny · 27/08/2022 21:35

I love it, and don’t know any.

Robin233 · 27/08/2022 21:36

It was my Granny's name.
What can I say?

ChagSameachDoreen · 27/08/2022 21:40

I love it. Such a sweet name.

Defiantlynot41 · 27/08/2022 21:40

Mine too @Robin233 -Elsie Theodora, how modern!

toastofthetown · 27/08/2022 21:42

Too popular is subjective, but it would way too popular for me to consider. It’s also a name which blends in with all the El- names and the -ie ones too. Elsie doesn’t sound distinct with Ella, Eliza, Ellie, Evie, Rosie, Maisie etc.

Luredbyapomegranate · 27/08/2022 21:44

I think it’s had it’s day personally

But if you really like it maybe Elizabeth nn Elsie so she has some options. It was originally a diminutive of Elizabeth and does still get used like that.

Sunnyshoeshine · 27/08/2022 21:53

It was my granny's name too - i always wanted to use it for my daughter but then it didn't work with DH's surname (which the baby was going to have - think rhyming) so it didn't get used in the end. Such a shame.

DramaAlpaca · 28/08/2022 02:57

No idea if it's popular or not. It does, however, manage to be both twee and frumpy at the same time, so that's quite an achievement.

Funny how changing around one letter makes such a difference: Elise is gorgeous and sophisticated, while Elsie will always be the dowdy parlourmaid.

Cindie943811A · 28/08/2022 12:09

@DramaAlpaca you are right. I prefer Elsa because it transforms the name to elegant lady from the domestic help

JustSortYoursefOut · 28/08/2022 12:12

It's another old-fashioned name that's apparently now back in fashion. I'm 63 ad remember having 2 Aunt Elsies. They would have been about 100 now!

Comedycook · 28/08/2022 12:12

Old lady name but without the old school elegance that some have. A bit parlour maid

lilaccottagegarden · 28/08/2022 12:14

I think Elise is horrible. It sounds like Alice said with a cockney accent - Elsie is much nicer!

bridgetreilly · 28/08/2022 13:06

I would call her Elspeth oe Elizabeth nn Elsie, and then if she turns out to be one of five Elsies, she could choose something else.

DuchessOfSausage · 28/08/2022 13:39

I don't like it or Elise. I like Elsa and Elspeth
