Ambrose or Barnaby?

to go with middle name Wilbur and 2 syllable surname? Are they too feminine or too popular at the moment..? Similar alternative names you prefer?

I don't like either personally, but if you have any Australian connections avoid Barnaby like the plague, it'd be like calling your son Boris in the UK.

Barnaby

I don't like Ambrose at all. It reminds me of Jabba the Hutt, all blobby and wobbly and clammy.

Barnaby - lovely name

The -rose bit of Ambrose is a bit too feminine. I know it's a boy's name but seeing as Rose and Rosie are very popular, with every other girl being something Rose, it might cause bullying

Prefer Ambrose- suggests to me an outdoor type/farmer/Rugged. A country name, rather than townie. Certainly not any asociation with Rose or 'girlie'.

Barnaby suggets floppy haired surfer type. Bit public school

I like both. Neither is pretentious. Ambrose does seem a bit feminine to me -even though I know it’s male, as if it’s a mix of Amber and Rose. It’s illogical. I don’t know any.

Barnaby - although I prefer Barnabas. It’s a nice name.

I am not keen on Ambrose.

My last baby would have been Barnaby had she not been a girl so that definitely gets my vote. I love it shortened to Barney and picture him as a little grubby-kneed fellow with stones and sticks in his pockets and a massive grin.

Ambrose is great and has history. The list of boys names is going to become very restricted if every second name is deemed to be too girlish.

Ambrose. It feels handsome, distinguished and soft sounding to me. Barnaby feels more twee and comedic to me. I prefer the flow of Barnaby, though I have a bee in my bonnet about three consecutive two syllable names.

Barnaby, no contest for me (although I admit I don't love nn Barney). Ambrose is lovely in theory but a lot of the time I can just hear the feminine sounding "Rose" part - so I much prefer the Welsh version Emrys (Merlin's "real" name! Smile)
