to go with middle name Wilbur and 2 syllable surname? Are they too feminine or too popular at the moment..? Similar alternative names you prefer?

I don't like either personally, but if you have any Australian connections avoid Barnaby like the plague, it'd be like calling your son Boris in the UK.

RoseMartha · 26/08/2022 00:06

Not keen on either

wherearebeefandonioncrisps · 26/08/2022 00:10

Neither.
Both pretentious.

DaisyJoy1 · 26/08/2022 00:33

LOVE Barnaby! Don’t like Ambrose, but neither name is pretentious, what a stupid comment from a PP

mathanxiety · 26/08/2022 00:42

Ambrose.

Both gorgeous names though.

mathanxiety · 26/08/2022 00:43

Yes, I agree, very stupid comment ('pretentious').

SizzlerFizzler · 26/08/2022 01:06

Barnaby

I don't like Ambrose at all. It reminds me of Jabba the Hutt, all blobby and wobbly and clammy.

DuchessOfSausage · 26/08/2022 08:35

Barnaby - lovely name

The -rose bit of Ambrose is a bit too feminine. I know it's a boy's name but seeing as Rose and Rosie are very popular, with every other girl being something Rose, it might cause bullying

Jessbow · 26/08/2022 09:06

Prefer Ambrose- suggests to me an outdoor type/farmer/Rugged. A country name, rather than townie. Certainly not any asociation with Rose or 'girlie'.

Barnaby suggets floppy haired surfer type. Bit public school

Snowiscold · 26/08/2022 09:27

I like both. Neither is pretentious. Ambrose does seem a bit feminine to me -even though I know it’s male, as if it’s a mix of Amber and Rose. It’s illogical. I don’t know any.

Luredbyapomegranate · 26/08/2022 10:08

Barnaby - although I prefer Barnabas. It’s a nice name.

I am not keen on Ambrose.

BreathingDeep · 26/08/2022 10:12

My last baby would have been Barnaby had she not been a girl so that definitely gets my vote. I love it shortened to Barney and picture him as a little grubby-kneed fellow with stones and sticks in his pockets and a massive grin.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 26/08/2022 10:16

I quite like them both. I would like a pair of placid, neutered cat brothers called Ambrose and Barnaby.

Rainbowqueeen · 26/08/2022 10:27

Love Barnaby and think it goes better with Wilbur

Greenkitten · 26/08/2022 10:30

Barnaby is lovely, don’t hear it much round here either

whatausername · 26/08/2022 12:00

Ambrose is refreshing, I like it

Cindie943811A · 26/08/2022 13:04

Ambrose is great and has history. The list of boys names is going to become very restricted if every second name is deemed to be too girlish.

toastofthetown · 26/08/2022 14:02

Ambrose. It feels handsome, distinguished and soft sounding to me. Barnaby feels more twee and comedic to me. I prefer the flow of Barnaby, though I have a bee in my bonnet about three consecutive two syllable names.

UsernameIsHarderThanBabyName · 27/08/2022 11:16

Ambrose

jibbe · 27/08/2022 11:17

Barnaby

Angelicapickles1 · 27/08/2022 11:18

love Barnaby !!!

Rebelmcstreettuff · 27/08/2022 11:21

I love Ambrose,know one who is a lovely man,agreed a distinguished name.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 27/08/2022 14:02

Barnaby, no contest for me (although I admit I don't love nn Barney). Ambrose is lovely in theory but a lot of the time I can just hear the feminine sounding "Rose" part - so I much prefer the Welsh version Emrys (Merlin's "real" name! Smile)

YesitsBess · 27/08/2022 14:04

Both lovely, and Wilbur 🥰

Anon50000 · 27/08/2022 14:05

Neither.
