Charlotte or Alice?

Which one do you prefer? Baby number 4.

If you don’t like either and feel compelled to express that, please throw in another suggestion! Thank you, I’m becoming name blind.

Hmm I don’t dislike either but know lots of both so I guess it depends how bothered you are about popularity. I know sooo many Charlottes, adult ones too.

What else do you like?

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 23/08/2022 14:44

I like both but Charlotte has a greater scope for nicknames should the child want to go down that route and I much prefer Charley or Lotte to Ali.

toastofthetown · 23/08/2022 14:47

Honestly, either. They’re both popular and classic and are pretty interchangeable. Why not try waiting until she’s born and see if one feels right then.

ehb102 · 23/08/2022 14:50

I like both, but you do get Alice the Camel and "who the F* is Alice?" yelled at you. Also Charlotte is set to be the new Olivia.

Both those names remind me of Queen Victoria's family. Other names of that ilk: Helena, Louisa, Beatrice, Alexandra,

DurdleSnore · 23/08/2022 14:51

Try tossing a coin. Heads for Charlotte and tails for Alice. You may get a gut feeling if it lands a particular way then you’ll know your answer!

toastofthetown · 23/08/2022 15:13

Also Charlotte is set to be the new Olivia.
Not really. In England and Wales at least, Charlotte has been on a steady decline since the 1990s, apart from a couple of small blips. I can’t see Charlotte having a rise in popularity to match Olivia.

MajorCarolDanvers · 23/08/2022 15:15

Both are beautiful classics which have stood the test of time.

I have a preference for Charlotte, but you won't go wrong with either.

Thehonestbadger · 23/08/2022 15:22

I love both, honestly I would have called my own daughter Alice (already have a Charlotte in the family) but it has the same nickname as my husband so we just couldn’t, would have been far too confusing.

Depends what your surname is but either of those are lovely. I’ll share the rest of our shortlist too just incase it inspires you

I prefer Alice. Funnily 2 of my close friends have both had Charlottes and Alice's recently.

YourWinter · 23/08/2022 21:26

I definitely prefer Charlotte.

FarFarFarAndAway · 23/08/2022 21:28

I love both, with a slight edge for Charlotte, and I think Charlie is cute if the child wants a less full on name when older. I suppose you could go Ali with Alice? Elizabeth is similar.

bakewellbride · 23/08/2022 21:32

I love both but we went with Charlotte for our dd (which I'm really glad about as my friend picked Alice!)

With Charlotte you have to be happy for them to potentially decide on Lottie or Charley when they're older.

I also love Eloise and Amelie.

DramaAlpaca · 23/08/2022 21:33

I love both, but because I generally prefer short, neat names I'd choose Alice.

Lemonsyellow · 23/08/2022 21:36

Both are OK but I much prefer Alice.
Caroline is effectively the same name as Charlotte and I think it’s much stronger.

Craftybodger · 23/08/2022 21:37

Much prefer Alice.

katielou987 · 23/08/2022 22:07

Alice definitely, it’s such a pretty name

Luredbyapomegranate · 24/08/2022 03:15

Charlotte - it has more spark
Alice is nice though, and faintly witchy..

They are both very overused though - a few other thoughts..

Charlotte, I don’t like Alice at all.

Carrots17 · 30/08/2022 13:56

This was super helpful - thank you everyone for commenting!! We have decided to pick Alice over Charlotte (almost 100% convinced but the Lois and Beatrice suggestions above are also circling in my head a bit still...). One issue is cockney husband's dropping of the "t" in Charlotte wrecks the lovely name a bit - which I have ended up doing as well now. I might need to see Mr Higgins. My closest pal from uni (13 years ago) is called Alice but she has given her blessing and I defo feel I can get over a daughter having the same name as a cracking friend.

My name is Charlotte and to be honest that could be a description of me...
