If we like these names what else will we like?

Probably early days to be thinking about this. I'm 17 weeks. But would love some help with baby name ideas. We won't know what we are having until the birth. I like names outside of top 100, not wierd but not popular. Me and my siblings have fairly unusual names and enjoyed being the only ones in our schools, work places etc.

Our shortlist so far for girls is

Blythe (I love a LOT. DH is kind of indifferent, it's just not clicked for him)

Posy (I like this as absolutely loved it as a child after Posy Fossil in my favourite book but slightly concerned it's too girly, what if she grows up to be really tall and broad?! DH really likes it a lot and thinks it's more hippy/flower child/Boho which is our vibe)

Dylan (too boyish?)

Libby (too popular?)

For boys we have

Cillian (we love this and think we are pretty settled unless something else comes along. DH is half Irish and we have a very Irish surname. Love Cilli as a derivative).

Casper (we both like this but not totally set).

Names I like but have been vetoed by DH

Girls
Demelza
Romily
Allegra
Avalon
Zelda
India

Boys
Ivo
Lennan
Sidney
Woody
Tadgh
Ernest

Anything else you think would suit us?

Girls suggestions are really nice. Love Xanthe suggested and Hollis (I liked Hadley after Hemmingways first wife but DH said no so maybe he will go for Hollis). Love Sadie. Love Robyn for a girl too. We were watching stranger things just after we found out we were pregnant and there is a Robyn on that and I suggested it but then forgot.

I liked Elias for a boy but worried its becoming too popular.

I should also say we are avoiding names beginning with J as both DH and I have J names. 3 people with the same initial /last name in a house seems confusing and then you have the problem of if we have another do we go the whole hog and name them a J name or exclude them. Either way would be weird.

How about Clara for a girl and Quentin for a boy?

FirstAidKitNowPlease · 17/08/2022 17:21

You are very specific about the popular thing. There is popular (see Ava, Isla, Bella, etc ) and there is heard of unusual names. Most of yours just about fit in the latter category.

Out of interest what's the challenge with popular ?

I've given my kids names that aren't run of the mill as my ex H had a very common surname. It's not appreciated by the kids. They never find things with their names on in shops and when friends can't spell say names it's isolating.

I wouldn't do it again tbh!

Prunel · 17/08/2022 17:30

Love Dylan for a girl and Blythe

I think Caspar is quite popular now though, but would have been my first choice too. I think we may have similar taste

FWIW my kids have outside-top-100 names (ranked 2707, 139 and 107 they years they were born) and

  1. they absolutely LOVE when we’ve come across others with the same name and getting personalised stuff; and

  2. we have met others with all of their names, in fact there were 2 of DC2 in his nursery class; and

  3. someone say DS1’s name on a peg at nursery and named their new baby the same. Nothing you can do to stop that!

I really wouldn’t worry about unusualness. I only know one Oliver and no Olivias.

MassiveSalad22 · 17/08/2022 17:31

*saw his name on a peg, not say!

Greeneyegirl · 17/08/2022 17:32

@pinklavenders I love Clara but it's been used in our family :(

@FirstAidKitNowPlease i just don't like popular names. Would hate for them to be one of many in the class or known as 'so and so S'. As I said in OP me and my 2 siblings have fairly unusual but not totally unheard of names (or they were in the 90s, mine and my sisters are now in the top 100 but my brothers never has been). We all liked being the only one in our schools and now our current work places. We never had our names on things in shops and I felt quite proud about that, I stood out a little.

I think the defining moment of knowing I could "do" popular names was when the lady I sat next to at work started referring to her OWN DAUGHTER in stories as 'Izzy S' because her two best friends were also called Izzy so whenever she talked about her daughters activities at the weekend or stories about her daughter at school it was always 'oh I took Izzy H and Izzy S to the cinema' or 'Izzy J won the egg and spoon but my Izzy S got first in the long jump'. Its so sad.

I know you’d rather not do J names but if you really like Jude, what about Julian?

We’re three J names and about to add to it with an A name!

Ugh there's always MN posters saying certain names are nicknames. They are names in their own right!

Greeneyegirl · 17/08/2022 19:52

I love a lot of these names!

For girls I love Aoife and it was top of our list for years before we started ttc but our best friends have just had an Eva so just seems to close. Also love Tabby but it's my step sisters name.

Love Autumn, Xanthe, Adelaide, Etta and Alba though, will add to list. Also loved Romy until Boris Johnson named his daughter that!

Boys names are hard but I like Rudy, Milo and Jasper suggested (even though a J name)

I like Persis for a girl (shortened to Persy or, at stretch, even Posy).

My favourite three girls names at the moment are Christian, Eden and Sidney.
