Is Jude the new Noah/Teddy/Oliver?

Always loved this name and has been one of our top choices throughout my pregnancy.

HOWEVER it is now ranked #35 most popular for 2022 and has risen 18 places in the space of a year. I know it shouldn’t matter how common a name is but it is bothering me, plus if it’s moved 18 places then potentially that means that it’ll be even more popular next year.

I have no plans to go for a crazy ‘out there’ name but would welcome views on how common you think the name is and how much this matters later down the line.

Is Jude the new Noah/Teddy/Oliver??

I think it definitely is, sorry. It is really nice. But I know 3 born since March, and it's ALWAYS on here.

Alternatives -

Joel
Joss
Jerome
Jethro
John
Jonathan
Jeremiah
Josiah
Joshua

Jonah also seems to be getting very popular, and possibly Jonas as well

I’m on a baby WhatsApp group and there have been 2 on there in the last few weeks alone so I think you’re right. A shame because I do really like it but I know it’ll bother me later down the line, thank you for the other name suggestions!

I can't see Jude becoming the new Oliver, but it's not too different to Teddy at the moment for me (both middling in the top hundred). Not sure if you're familiar with the Dark Greener website and it's hard to predict the future exactly, but Jude looks to be plateauing, with 2017 being its most popular year. I'm also not sure where your 2022 data is coming from, but it's not likely to be accurate. In England and Wales the most recent data is from 2020 (with 2021 expected soon) and Jude increased from 57th to 53rd, which isn't that dramatic, especially when that rise was only 12 more baby Judes in 2020.

Aww crap

DNAshelicase · 13/08/2022 10:39

@toastofthetown I’ve never seen this website, this is so helpful thank you! The data I mentioned I saw in the independent but the original info came from babycentre www.babycentre.co.uk/b25052040/guess-whos-back-back-again-we-reveal-the-top-baby-names-of-2022-so-far

@AprilRae91 haha sorry! I’m guessing I’ve burst your bubble too!? Better to know now and factor it into your decision, than to find out later that it’s a lot more popular than you expected and possibly regret it

Baby centre have no way of knowing what names have been used most in 2022 so far. It's probably based on searches, not actually usage, like Nameberry.

Definitely use the official ONS list (and names.darkgreener).

ChagSameachDoreen · 13/08/2022 15:05

I hope not. It's dreadful! Just makes me think of JUDE, written on the yellow stars Jews had to wear in nazi Europe.

Aria20 · 13/08/2022 15:52

@toastofthetown 2017 makes sense as the only 2 young Judes I know were born in 2017! I don't any recent ones.

AliceW89 · 13/08/2022 15:58

I really like it, but it is supremely common, at least where I live. I can think of at least 5 between friends kids, other kids at nursery and toddler group.

liveforsummer · 13/08/2022 16:04

It's reasonable common round here but the dc are all a bit older - mid to late primary age. I don't know any little Jude's so maybe it will have had it's peak then decrease. It's a nice name and tbh I'd not pay much attention to the charts anyway. Go with what you like

pinklavenders · 13/08/2022 16:36

All I think of is Jew - as Jude is the German word for Jew.

I also find it slightly feminine - as I know several Judiths and Judys nicknamed Jude

Antarcticant · 13/08/2022 16:42

Call him Julian with NN Jude? Like Julian Lennon 😃

Amdone123 · 13/08/2022 16:45

I know a few, too. Same with Otis and Reuben.
I don't like it. Feels like it should be short for something.

MrsCharlieD · 13/08/2022 16:50

I have a Jude, he's 8 now. I think it was placed around 70 something when I named him and it's been my top boys name since I was kid and my dad introduced me to the Beatles. I hate it's getting popular but whatever. I only know of 1 other IRL and he's the only one in his class. My youngest is River which I'm pretty sure won't go the same way Smile

bloominglovelyorange · 13/08/2022 18:29

Agree with @toastofthetown - always check the Dark Greener website as that uses the official data. Jude has totally plateaued . I'd use it

mathanxiety · 13/08/2022 20:12

If you love the name, why not use it?

You have no guarantee that you won't bump into the only other Jethro in the county on the first day of school.

BiscuitLover3678 · 14/08/2022 20:13

It’s getting there but more like Arthur - not as popular as Noah or Oliver but there may be one or two.
The thing is there are so many popular names now. The top 100 are all very similar in number.

Imaginary · 15/08/2022 14:55

Can't understand why this name is so popular. Reminds me of Judas. Not the best association.
