Although I like to choose a name from my culture for my baby. What do you think of each of these names for baby girl?HalynLaniaSojinLylanDahliaBTW is that bad if my baby initial to be AH? I avoid any name that starts with A cuz of this. Thanks

Halyn - Is it said at Hay-Lyn. Halo or Hailey are prettier
Lania - Lan-eye-a or Lan-ya? Makes me think of Lanyard
Sojin - So-Jin is better but only if korean
Lylan - Lyla and Lila are popular. Lylan looks wrong
Dahlia - not unusual. Day-lia or Dah-lia?

If the surname is unusual, the firstname and surname combination might be unique, which can be an issue if she doesn't want to be the only one listed on a google search.
Your list seems a bit try-hard

Butteryflakycrust83 · 09/08/2022 14:48

Why does it matter if the name is unique? Pick the name you like and remember, this is the name they have for life. Not just as a cute baby, but as a teenager, as a work colleague, as an 80 year old woman.

No one pays attention to initials!

DancingUnderTheLights · 09/08/2022 14:50

Why is AH bad as initials? I have J as a surname so avoid B names because that would be a rude sounding initials and could lead to teasing.

DancingUnderTheLights · 09/08/2022 14:51

I found some of your names are to pronounce. I do like Dahlia though.

DancingUnderTheLights · 09/08/2022 14:51

*I found some of your names hard to pronounce

NuffSaidSam · 09/08/2022 14:56

It's extremely unlikely that you're going to find a name that is completely unique unless you go for something completely ridiculous, so I would get rid of that idea and instead focus on picking a name that you like and that works in your culture and the country you plan to raise her live in.

In the UK the initials AH are fine. I don't know if that's the case everywhere.

From your list I like Lania or Dahlia best.

Lylan looks made up, makes me think of Rylan.

Halyn - sounds like a weather forecast.

Sojin - I think has a harsh sound to it, it's fine but not my taste.

@Butteryflakycrust83 , if you have a unique name when growing up, you might feel envious of friends with more regular names. My name are unique. A quick google and you'll find all sorts about me, and I'd rather be a bit more anonymous. Separately, the names are not unique.

@NuffSaidSam, my full name is unique. First name is not much used, surname is foreign and not unusual but not particularly common in that country, no middle name.

MyMILisLovely · 09/08/2022 15:34

@NuffSaidSam , my name is ridiculous??? Shock

RooniIWazlib · 09/08/2022 15:35

What do you mean your surname is unique? Did you invent a surname for yourself?

Dahlia is nice. Go for that.

Jobsharenightmare · 09/08/2022 15:40

I think you're going to get white replies on here and lots of suggestions for white names, is that what you intend? If you mean your name is unique in the West then maybe make that clear. I am Asian and there are some useful sites in my culture to help find names. Don't worry about pronunciation if sticking to your cultural roots is important to your family.

KirstenBlest · 09/08/2022 15:52

What is your cultural background @rockcage , those names seem to have different origins

Imaginary · 11/08/2022 13:33

Dahlia is the only decent name here, sorry.

Luxa · 11/08/2022 17:09

Dahlia is fine and I think it's unusual. I've never met one.

Mommaaaaa · 12/08/2022 03:18

Halo or Hailey was the one best for me here it is so heavenly it's like thanking God for giving you the angel of your life.

Scirocco · 12/08/2022 06:42

If you have a surname which is unusual in your culture, it might work best with a less unusual first name. I'd say that you should pick names that you love, rather than worrying about trying to come up with something unique.

What is your cultural background? People might be able to give some ideas if you feel comfortable sharing that?

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 12/08/2022 07:41

AH initials are fine in the UK, unless I've been missing something all my life? Are you in the UK @rockcage ?

MsTSwift · 12/08/2022 07:47

She won’t thank you when she’s having to spell / explain the name on every new interaction. A friend has a made up name (slightly different to a more common name) and bemoans it as a right pain and eye rolls about her “bloody mother” who lumbered her with it. She goes by the shortened version of the popular name to avoid the faff.

TheBirdintheCave · 12/08/2022 11:03

Ok so, firstly a few questions so that we can help you better:

Where will the child in question be growing up?
What is your cultural background?

Jobsharenightmare · 12/08/2022 13:47

She won’t thank you when she’s having to spell / explain the name on every new interaction.

^ what an incredibly ignorant thing to say to someone who is looking for a new from their cultural background. I have to spell my first and surnames every single time in the West. When I am in a country where my name is very well known for its faith based origins I don't. I'd have been so sad if my parents tried to make me pass for white British.

KirstenBlest · 12/08/2022 14:16

@Jobsharenightmare , we don't know what OP's cultural background is. The names might not be from OP's culture or heritage.
Halyn is american, Lania german, Sojin korean, Lylan possibly canadian, and Dahlia scandinavian/botany. (based on quick searches)

Has it crossed your mind that only an ignorant person would accuse another poster of being ignorant? Other posters have posted about what a PITA it is to have tricky names, so it's not ignorant to post about it.
