Our baby boy Arthur!

Hi everyone,

I'm due in 10weeks time, expecting another baby boy!
Me and DP have decided to name our baby Arthur as we both really love it and it also goes with Ds1's name.

The only thing bugging me is when I tell friends and family baby's name I have been getting some funny looks and have had people say "Arthur? You're calling him Arthur?"
This has happened multiple times and it's really making me paranoid about his name.
I don't know if it's me being sensitive but I don't understand why people have had such a shocked reaction?
We love the name Arthur and I can't see what's 'wrong' with it.
I know I should have challenged friends and family and asked them their opinions but I guess I didn't want to hear anything negative about his name. I just wanted them to say how beautiful it is 🤣

So I'm being brave and starting this thread to ask what are your thoughts on the name Arthur? Please be honest, I can take it, I think 😳😂

Thank you xx🙂

Maybe they think it’s too common a name now?

Cas112 · 01/08/2022 12:23

It's quite old school but I love it, I think it's lovely

pepsirolla · 01/08/2022 12:28

Absolutely love Arthur, it was our top choice if we'd had a second boy. It means bear, noble and courageous. A name that is cute as a child and one to grow into too. Ignore the naysayers 🐻

villamariavintrapp · 01/08/2022 12:33

Arthur's nice enough, I know a couple of them born recently. As for their reaction, do they know an Arthur? Maybe they're surprised you're using same name as someone they know/don't like/someone's pet/etc etc. Probably best to just ask them?

MoltenLasagne · 01/08/2022 12:38

We wanted to call DS1 Arthur for a while but loads of our family are Peaky Blinders fans and they kept saying "Ar-thoooor". Is it that?

addler · 01/08/2022 12:45

Where do you live? It's a very normal name and getting quite popular. I have one and have met a few others as well.

Just don't tell people your baby's name until after they're born- then no one will say anything negative because he'll already be here.

Congratulations and all the best with your Arthur!

ChaosMoon · 01/08/2022 13:19

It's a gorgeous name.
People are idiots.
This is why you shouldn't tell anyone the name until the baby is here.

StorieAnna · 01/08/2022 13:21

I have a gorgeous nephew Arthur, shortened to Arty or Art. 💙

roarfeckingroarr · 01/08/2022 13:26

I have an Arthur and he's beautiful. I've only had positive comments about his name (except my dad, who quickly sorted out his face and now likes it). Great choice.

Ours goes by Arthur, Artie bear and various silly nicknames that have stuck.

sunglassesonthetable · 01/08/2022 13:27

I have one! I love it and so does he. It's fab and We don't know any others.

You really shouldn't be telling other people the name. Of course everyone is not going to like it. Why would they? You wouldn't necessarily choose the names they like!

Telling people before the baby is born is a dangerous game and you've found out why.

Stop looking for your other peoples agreement . It's SO random why we choose the names we do.

Once the LO is born people wouldn't dream of commentating on the name.

It's YOUR choice. Own it. Just be vague if people ask or say you haven't decided yet.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 01/08/2022 13:29

Is it because of Arthur who was murdered? If so that is crazy

yikesanotherbooboo · 01/08/2022 13:33

DS is 21 and it had already become quite a usual name in those days. Are they the types who insist on extremely unusual/ made-up names?

LincolnshireYellowBelly · 01/08/2022 14:00

I’ve never been a massive fan of the very traditional and old fashioned names. As in, I wouldn’t choose to call my own children those names. However, I do think it’s a beautiful name. Arthur or Art. I think such negative reactions are incredibly rude. Should there be a baby #3, keep the name to yourselves x x x

NuffSaidSam · 01/08/2022 14:04

It wouldn't be my choice of name, but it's quite popular now so it wouldn't be a name that would provoke a reaction of any kind. It's a perfectly nice name.

Maybe they think it's quite different to your other child's name and were just surprised. I know someone who has three children with very common, traditional names and then one that is really unusual and I remember being surprised when they announced his name just because it was so different to the other three, not because it wasn't a nice name.

Thank you so so much to everyone who has taken the time to post. Its been so lovely to read everyone opinions and thoughts!
I've definitely learnt if I get asked baby's name again, I'm keeping my mouth shut until he is here! 🤣 And I definitely won't make this mistake again if I have baby no. 3!
It's been lovely to see positive comments about the name Arthur

Lovely name OP! I think Arthur is timeless and classic. Take no notice of any negative comments from friends/family I’m sure they’ll get used to it and love him!

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 01/08/2022 17:51

It's the third most popular name in England and Wales. It really is not an unusual choice any more. Your friends and family need to catch up!

babyjellyfish · 02/08/2022 10:47

Absolutely nothing wrong with the name Arthur.

Your mistake was telling people his name before he is born.

Hotenoughtoburnasausage · 02/08/2022 10:49

Imo it takes me back to old episodes of Eastenders!!
Good name though op!!

rightonthyme · 02/08/2022 11:17

I love Arthur but because of King Arthur! It's a beautiful name.

Enko · 02/08/2022 11:37

Just reply noo you misheard I said Adolf.. then they will soon think Arthur is good 😁

It's a perfectly normal name

RuthW · 02/08/2022 12:16
