Violet - wow what an unusual name

I feel like I’m living in an alternate universe!!

We wanted a name for our DD that was a classic normal English name, easy to spell and pronounce. We went with Violet.

From the minute she arrived everyone from family, friends and the nurses/ midwives have been so surprised by our name choice and said how unusual it is, they’ve never heard of any Violet’s etc.

we are confused and feel like the reaction is akin to if we’d named her Larksong or something!

OP posts:

Well, it is unusual in that it's not particularly common and whilst I've obviously heard the name Violet, I've never met one, don't know of any and can't think of any famous Violets.

Violette Szabo? OK so she had the French spelling.

OP It's a lovely name, overdue for a comeback.

Duttercup · 01/08/2022 09:45

Not unusual or uncommon, I know of at least 12 young violets in my DDs primary and preschools. Also have a niece called Violet.

Yeah but a name that's recently become popular (i.e. in the last 10 years) will still sound unusual to adults without primary/pre-school school kids who will mostly only know a handful of smaller children. Takes a while for them to get into general circulation.

@Louise0701 I on the other hand know 19 Olivias age. 1 to 26. I know 3 Evies In Primary schools and 4 Avas Primary to secondary school ages.

I dont personally know any Violets however I know it to be a popular name. I do know a Lark (not Larksong Though)

Just here to say Violet is a beautiful name. Flowers

pimlicoanna · 01/08/2022 09:49

Where do you live? It's not unusual where I am. I know two and another in my family

Enko · 01/08/2022 09:50

Should perhaps also be said I am in a secondary school 1 day a week

TheYearOfSmallThings · 01/08/2022 09:52

It is odd because Violet was uncommon for many decades but then about 8 years ago there was an outburst of little Violets (and Irises and Margots etc). It certainly is more common than Jane or Mary or Susan and names like that.

YawnYawnYawn00 · 01/08/2022 09:53

I love the name Violet and considered that name for our DD.
I know of a violet as well. I don't think it's unusual. It's uncommon. But it's a really lovely name.

fyn · 01/08/2022 09:53

How strange, we know lots of little Violets! I’m almost certain it’s in the top half of the most popular baby names in the UK. Last time I looked Nora was in the top 100 though that I wouldn’t have expected!

Alwayswonderedwhy · 01/08/2022 09:54

It's a lovely name. Where do you live? It's not a overly used name but wouldn't call it unusual.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 01/08/2022 09:54

A friend of mine who's Polish is called Viola. Which is sort of similar.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 01/08/2022 09:55

Violet is a lovely name. I don't know any personally, but that's because I don't know many small children.

hummerbird · 01/08/2022 10:10

I assume peak Sue was 10 years ago, Nearly all the 30 somethings were called Sue.

FayCarew · 01/08/2022 10:14

@hummerbird , peak Sue 10 years ago? You sure?

Can I just say I think violet is a beautiful name choice. My grandma was called violet and if I was having a girl I would also name her violet. (Currently 20 weeks pregnant with a boy) ignore peoples stupid comments. Someone always has something to say 😤

BigFatLiar · 01/08/2022 10:21

Lovely name.

MandyRice · 01/08/2022 10:31

lovely name and far more popular than Jane (which is currently 1618th in the UK 😂).

I think that, unless someone takes an active interest in baby names, their views are generally a few decades out of date. I can remember MIL fretting when SIL named her baby Arthur because it was so unusual 😭(currently top 3!)

VirginiaQ · 01/08/2022 10:35

Has no one ever read Charlie and the Chocolate factory or seen the film??

Violet Beauregarde is what always springs to mind when I hear the name Violet.

BungleandGeorge · 01/08/2022 10:36

I’m very surprised a midwife would find it unusual, perhaps they were recently qualified! Generally they’ve heard everything before!

Viostep · 01/08/2022 10:40

I have a little Violet so I love the name. I haven't met any other babies with the same name but I think it's increasing in popularity overall.

Baconking · 01/08/2022 10:42

There are 2 in one class at my son's school. They are 15

GreenEyedFox · 01/08/2022 11:00

My DD has Violet has one if her middle names - named after her granddad’s mum and sister . It’s pretty.

Devpatelslaughingeyes · 01/08/2022 11:04

I had an auntie and a cousin called Violet which was unfortunately shortened to Vi. It’s old fashioned but very lovely. Very oretty name.

Devpatelslaughingeyes · 01/08/2022 11:04

Or even pretty 😂

IceStationZebra · 01/08/2022 11:09

It’s a gorgeous name and was my great grandmother’s name. However I don’t think I have ever met one (never met my GGM) so would say it’s definitely unusual, for some reason it’s not in the 1920s/30s revival of Elsie/Maude/Audrey/etc that you see a lot at the moment.
