Middle name for Melody

I’m expecting a girl in December and we’re fairly confident on the name Melody. DH loves it, I’m not 100% yet but we’re using it all the time to refer to baby so it feels more like her name every day. He’s French, I’m English and we currently live in Spain so the name needs to be suitable for all three languages. She will have both our surnames (2-syllab 3-syllab) with no hyphen.

So questions for you:

  1. Do you prefer the spelling Melody or Mélodie? I don’t mind either but wondering if the accent on the é will be a big hassle in the UK.
  2. We haven’t got a middle name yet. I’d like it to begin with a “C” as a connection to my parents and sisters’ names but not essential.
To give an idea of style, some other names I like are: Celeste, Cassandra, Josephine, Angelica. DH likes Serena, Cleopatra. My parents are big on Cora.

Beautiful name with either spelling. Cora or Celeste are my favourite of the middle names you listed. The others feel too long to me.

KangarooKenny · 29/07/2022 17:41

I prefer the Melody spelling, and I think Celeste is lovely. Cora is a bit harsh IMO.

Willdoitlater · 29/07/2022 17:45

I would choose the spelling appropriate for the country she will be going to school in.

Personally I think Melody/Mélodie are both lovely enough that a plainer middle name might suit. Anne, Clare, Jane, Ruth, Faye, etc., especially with 5 syllables of surname.

bitingcat · 29/07/2022 17:51

Melody Celeste is lovely but are you going for a musical theme? Celeste is a type of musical instrument!

Krakinou · 29/07/2022 18:01

@bitingcat We like the musical connection for each name individually, but yeah, I’m not sure if it’s a bit too much with both. Verging into Disney princess territory maybe. And I’m wondering if it would be better to save Celeste for a future daughter.

@Willdoitlater I think the idea of a single syllable name is good, but they often sound so much like filler names to me. The only ones that really appeal are Jean and Joan, but our niece’s middle name is Jeanne so they’re off limits :/ All inspiration welcome though.

Pretty name, I slightly prefer Mélodie, but I tend to like vowel-ier looking names.
When I read you'd like a 'C' I thought Cordelia, but it might be too many syllables?

Namechange192727171 · 29/07/2022 18:07

Definitely have a one syllable middle name, otherwise her name will feel a little 'jumbled' with 2 surnames.

I love Melody. I wouldn't use accent of any kind because some countries have weird name laws or weird spelling criteria.
BTW, Spain has naming laws, please check them before you apply the name.

Melody Catherine ? It gives her a traditional option.

The y spelling will be easier in the Uk, where certainly the accent will never get used.

Luredbyapomegranate · 30/07/2022 13:51

Or Melody Clara - that does better actually and is more or a classic name than Cora, which I think you need with melody.

Spanielsarepainless · 30/07/2022 13:52

Melody, otherwise you set them up for a lifetime of explaining.
Melody Cecelia, to keep the music theme.

Melody May sounds lovely and good luck with it all

TheVanguardSix · 30/07/2022 14:27

I have a wonderful friend named Melody (I prefer the English spelling to the French). I always think of the Serge Gainsbourg’s L’hôtel particulier when I hear the name.
Aria as a middle name? I know it might be a bit much on the music theme but it sounds good together! Melody Aria.

elp30 · 30/07/2022 14:52

My family member is called, Melodie Carol.

Personally, I'm not keen on the musical connotations her parents had in mind but it sounds nice together.

ODFOx · 30/07/2022 15:32

Clare/Claire

Melody Claire is so lovely to say.

Thank you so much for all the suggestions - some lovely names in here. I will be rereading this thread for a while and trying out different combinations I think. At the moment I quite like Clara and still tempted by Celeste.

@TheVanguardSix i will have a listen to that song. Maybe it will convince MIL. She’s got a strong poker face but I have a feeling she doesn’t love the name yet.
