Using my guilty pleasure name

Has anyone used their guilty pleasure name and if so, did it work out or did you regret it?

I'm currently 16 weeks pregnant with a boy. This will be an only child, due to previous traumatic losses I’m requesting a tubal during my planned C-section.

I’ve always loved the name Mars, since I was a teenager but never thought I would be brave enough to use it. Now I’m pregnant, I just don’t love any other boy name. My husband has an uncommon name and has had a positive experience so he is all for it. I’ve casually mentioned it to my sister and a few friends and have had all positive responses.

Would it be crazy? For extra context I’m an Australian who lives in America so there are no Mars Bars here.

In America? With no Mars bars? I'd still give him a more commonplace /"normal" middle name just in case he's a shy type - but I think he'll be fine. I admit I wouldn't be that brave, but then I live in a rural area in the UK where most names seem to be top 100 types and am quite unconfident/shy myself.

Pretty sure it's a surname (written differently) in the UK and I've never heard anyone quibbling about the god of war

Sorry, just no. The god of war? In these terrible times? You think that’s a good name for a child? It’s really crass and offensive.

Shhhhh, no one tell @SundayTeatime about Tuesday

SundayTeatime · 30/07/2022 06:23

Tuesday is fine, if you like that. So is Marcus. Mars isn’t.

It's a surname in the US too - the Mars family owns the Mars company.

I love it! My choice would have been Merlin

Penfelyn · 07/08/2022 18:41

Honestly I wouldn't dare to use Mars, not least because it would always make me think of the chocolate bars (even if no one else makes the connection). I'd use Lars or Mark or something like that.

But if the chocolate bar thing doesn't bother you and won't be known around you then I see nothing objectionable about the name.

Just remember that he might travel to Europe or elsewhere when he's grown up, and might find the reactions to his name tiring. Not a reason not to use it, just something to consider.

Go for it OP and have a most enjoyable pregnancy.
With your interests your DS will early associate his name with the planet. And thanks to Holst theres even music as well

Elspethelf · 09/08/2022 04:22

Thank you @Cindie943811A! We were just listening to the planets today, our baby absolutely be familiar with Holst and Mars :)

I'm surprised at the response as MN can be quite conservative. I quite like it but I'm not sure I'd be brave enough to use it. I have a name that I've liked for a while for a girl. I do wonder about regret if I do or don't use it.

Imaginary · 10/08/2022 15:16

I personally don't like it.
But they use lots of weird names in America, so he'll fit right in.

watcherintherye · 10/08/2022 15:24

For people worried about the US lack of mars bars, they're called Milky Way there. And what Brits call a Milky Way is a 3 Musketeers.

I don’t want to derail the thread, but I wonder if there are any other common UK chocolate bars with different names in the USA? 3 Musketeers Grin

DuchessOfSausage · 10/08/2022 16:09

brand names @watcherintherye

ladygindiva · 10/08/2022 16:28

You like it, your DH likes it, job done, noone elses business. I think it's ok. Many many congratulations on your baby xxx

Yesthemama · 16/08/2022 21:43

So i have a markus. I have always called him mars as a nickname. It has never bothered him when i call him that in public either. And when we're home i call him mars bar because our last name happens to be bartlett. I think it's funny how that turned out. So i would say yes absolutely go for it! Especially if this is your only child.
