Nice, meh, try hard?

It's not a very British name, more French /German or is it?

Love it but not sure. 🤔

What middle names would go with Elise?

I really like it, but I agree with a pp that it almost feels like yet another El—— name Ellie, Ella, etc, and not far off the zillions of Evies - just in sound.

That might not bother you, though.

RuthW · 27/07/2022 12:16

Not to my taste. A bit 90s

Onceuponatimethen · 27/07/2022 14:01

Elise Ottilie would be lovely as pp said

SalviaOfficinalis · 27/07/2022 14:03

I know two in their 20s (British).
Both pronounced with an “s” not “z” sound, like the s sound in Lisa.

I like it.

Clairewentoverthemountain · 27/07/2022 16:56

Lovely, classy, not try hard or boring. It's like, uncommon but known. Not overdone, but not weird. A good balance and a pretty sound.

midsomermurderess · 27/07/2022 17:11

I actually prefer Elsie. But Elise is nice, as is the tune.

Roselilly36 · 27/07/2022 17:15

Lovely name

toastinateapot · 27/07/2022 17:16

Lovely name if pronounced El-eece.

KirstenBlest · 27/07/2022 17:37

@toastinateapot , it's not pronounced El-eece. It would need to be spelt Elice to get that pronunciation.

ChagSameachDoreen · 27/07/2022 17:53

It's a bit greasy-sounding.

Depoisthedevil · 27/07/2022 20:24

I have an Elise Nicole

Luredbyapomegranate · 27/07/2022 23:03

I like it and always hear it said as Ell-eess, although you might get people saying El-eeze.

The thing that might put me off though is it's another El name so quite a high chance she'll end up one of a zillion Ellies. It also sounds very like Elizabeth and all the short forms - Eliza, Elsa, Elsie -which are very popular right now. (Well obviously it sounds similar because it's another form of Elizabeth, but you know what I mean - they do all blur a bit.)

Krakinou · 27/07/2022 23:27

I’d pronounce it eh-LEEZ by default but Eh-LEECE sounds fine too. If you want to lean into the French thing, Lisou is a lovely nickname as an alternative to Elle/Ellie. (Pronounced lee-ZOO).

Cindie943811A · 28/07/2022 00:31

OP if you’re worried about Elise being too exotic you could use Alice.
All the Elises I’ve come across have pronounced it as El -lease. ( though run together, of course to flow).
Lisa is pronounced with an “s” sound and Liza or Eliza with a “z” sound.

DuchessOfSausage · 28/07/2022 08:04

I think some people don't hear the difference between different s sounds. The S sound in cheese and fleece isn't the same.

RicottaCake · 28/07/2022 09:54

How about Elisa (El-eesa) with a sharp 's'? Is it too confusing because of Eliza?

I personally am not to fond of Elsie and can see it being mixed up or being shortened to Ellie.

Nice to that it's mostly positive views for Elise. Smile

I like Elise. It's lovely.
No to Elisa.
Yes to Eliza !

Love a pp's suggestion of Elise Juliette.

MassiveSalad22 · 28/07/2022 10:19

Love it! It’s my niece’s middle name and I’m still perplexed why they wouldn’t use that for a first name!

RicottaCake · 28/07/2022 10:21

Love the sound of Elise Juliette 😍

It's my DDs name, pronounced with a hard s as in please.

I don't really like it with a soft s (to rhyme with fleece) but accept that it is the way a lot of people say it.

I really love it and get lots of compliments on it. I think it's quite classy and simple without being overused.

If I'm being honest it doesn't flow with her surname all that well, but after a lot of searching we couldn't find another name we liked as much and we make it work.

RicottaCake · 28/07/2022 10:46

@ItsDangerousInKingsmarkham thank you Smile Can I pls. clarify, do you pronounce your dd's name Elise (as in please) and not Elise (as in fleece)? To me the s in please is a soft s but I might be getting that wrong.

OP posts:
ItsDangerousInKingsmarkham · 28/07/2022 10:58

Yes we say E-leez as in please, more like a z sound.

Lots of people say the s in a way that is like fleece or police.

Maybe I'm getting my hard and soft muddled up 🤔 I think both are known and accepted pronunciations but we've always like the z sound more.

landonbaby · 28/07/2022 14:51

Love it! ❤️
