How to double barrel or portmanteau these names

Asking on behalf of a friend....
They would prefer to have the same name after marriage and for any future children to have the name too.
They would have preferred to double-barrel or portmanteau the names rather than one person take the other person's name.

Unfortunately the names don't work very easily for that...
The names are something like Van Driesen and Sampson.
How would you try and make this work? Can you double-barrel a name where one of them already has two bits to it?

How about Van Sampson? It’s the only sensible way I can see of doing it.

DramaAlpaca · 17/07/2022 23:38

Van Driesen Sampson sounds fine actually, or Sampson Van Driesen.

Or how about Vandriesen Sampson, or the other way round?

LarryTrotter · 18/07/2022 00:04

Van Sampson

YellowLemonshade · 18/07/2022 00:18

Is one name actually Van Whatever or is that just your example?
If so, I don't think you can have 'Van' on its own without the name to which it refers.
I may be wrong, but I think it's a Dutch prefix which means 'from'
Van isn't a name on its own. So Van Sampson is a bit odd.

Sampson Van Driesen sounds good.

NuffSaidSam · 18/07/2022 00:22

I think Vandriesen-Sampson sounds good. Although a bit of a pain to have to write down/too long for some name boxes etc.

Van Sampson is also a nice compromise.

SleepingStandingUp · 18/07/2022 00:28

Sampdriesden

SleepingStandingUp · 18/07/2022 00:28

Driesampson

SpaceJamtart · 18/07/2022 00:29

Samriesen
Samsen
Drieson
Van Damson
Van Sampson
Sam Driesen

ChagSameachDoreen · 18/07/2022 00:32

Van Drampson.

HaveringWavering · 18/07/2022 00:40

If it is a “van” name then it’s only the space when written that makes it seem like it’s already double- barrelled but really it’s no different to being called MacDonald or FitzHerbert. Sounds fine double - barrelled to me Sampson - Van Driesen.

TreePoser · 18/07/2022 07:54

I wouldn't, it'll lead to loads of questions.

"Is Sampson a Dutch name?"

Leave the final letter off Dreisen so that it's dreez not dreezen. Sounds better without the sound 'enn' repeated.
ie Sampson Van Dreise sounds ok and not too cumbersome.

TreePoser · 18/07/2022 07:55

Thev"i wouldn't" was i wouldn't portmanteau them!! Didn't explain that well.

TreePoser · 18/07/2022 07:56

ChagSameachDoreen · 18/07/2022 00:32

Van Drampson.

😅

Crunchymum · 18/07/2022 14:44

I's go double barrelled.

Van Driesen-Sampson or Sampson-Van Driesen.

I hate blended names only slightly more than I hate super long double barrelled names.

QuantumWeatherButterfly · 18/07/2022 14:58

I think Sampson-Van Driesen is fine, it's only 5 syllables, which isn't ridiculous for double barrelling. But if it needed to be shorter, you could drop the Van, so either Sampson-Driesen, or Driesen-Sampson

LimpBiskit · 18/07/2022 15:19

They all sound pretentious to me.

Sampson Van Driesen sounds good.

It's like Van Something. So the same issue. I agree I didn't think it would be possible to separate out the van and the other bit...

That's a good way of looking at it...

Vamp

HaveringWavering · 20/07/2022 11:54

Out of interest, does the person write it

“van Driesen” or “Van Driesen”.
I think if lower case then the van bit is even less likely to look like a standalone name.

Notgotanyidea · 20/07/2022 19:05

Vanson

EdgeOfACoin · 20/07/2022 22:11

Sampson Van Driesen.

I wouldn't mess around with a hyphen.

Lunadreamer · 20/07/2022 22:17

Sampson Van Driesen

Although it sounds like a full name. A bit like Trent Alexander Arnold.

Luredbyapomegranate · 21/07/2022 07:15

LarryTrotter · 18/07/2022 00:04

Van Sampson

Van Sampson sounds a lot sillier than Van Drieson Sampson or Sampson Van Drieson both of which sound fine
