Which spelling makes more sense? Does either change the pronunciation?

Elise can be E-lees or Eleeez. Depends on how you pronounce it. I know an Elise (pronounced E-lees), such a lovely name.

I think it looks wrong with a Y.

I'd pronounce both Eleez unless told otherwise.

SoupDragon · 11/07/2022 12:54

(Maybe slightly more likely to think Elees with a Y for some reason)

Elise - El-ise

Elyse - Eleeze

Elise is El-ees

One hundred percent Elise.

As someone who writes the name every day (Wink) Elise just looks pretty on the page with that little downward slope while Elyse looks kinda awkward and a little wrong.

I also far FAR prefer when people call me Elise (the exact way it spelled). With Y people might think it's Eleeeeze and you'll come across certain nutters in life who you highly suspect are having a competition with themselves to drag out the leeeeeaze in Eleeeeeeeeeeaaaazzzzzze as far as they can without taking a breath.

Gets right on my tits.

The only point in Ys corner is that it might prevent the occasional Elsie when the human brain reads the first letter + last letter + shape of the word. Yuo fnid tihs smilpe to raed bceuase of the phaonmneal pweor of the hmuan mnid but luckily Elsie is quite fashionable these days (as opposed to my 90s school days when it was THE most grannyish name in existence).

Elise 🥂

I think it’s almost always Eh-lease in the UK.

I prefer Elisa but it’s OK

The y will just cause confusion

The Lotus Elise is pronounced Elle-ease if that helps.

Growing up, I always heard this name pronounced eh-leez with a Z sound (maybe because of French influence? I know that's the standard French pronunciation. I would also say de-neez for Denise rather than de-niece, which sounds odd to me).

My ex was South African and had a relative named Elyse. I noticed that South Africans always pronounced it eh-leess with an S sound.

So I guess it just depends! I like both spellings.
