Having a wobble on chosen name (have included in list below) have 3 other girls with traditional names with perhaps a slightly modern vibe to them but suit all ages etc

madeleine (pronounced line not Lyn)
annie (just Annie not Anna or anne)
phoebe (only issue is this is dds 3 middle name but she doesn’t mind)
violet (I love Violet but dislike nn Vi which I think rules this out for us but it will be a middle name)
evelyn (pronounced ever-Lyn not eve-Lyn)
ruby
Nancy & Betsy (I’m unsure on these I think they’re lovely but not sure if she’d thank me)

thank you

Elodie is really dull and is yet another Ellie name

MsMcGonagall · 13/07/2022 08:37

Ruby or Annie, that's my vote

The only one I don't like is Violet, too close to violent

theanxiousgardener · 13/07/2022 08:42

I'd go with Annie Violet Surname

-No varied pronunciations or spellings
-No weird / unpleasant nicknames (unlike Vi, Bet, Nan)
-Not her sister's name

goldfinchonthelawn · 13/07/2022 08:47

I wouldn't go for MadeLINE. It's not the usual pronunciation and she will forever be correcting people. And some teachers might even correct her, which is confusing (I've seen it happen when a child is saddled with a quirky version of a common name.)

Same with Evelyn - she will get people calling her by ther worng pronuncition half the time. It gets dull, over the course of a lifetime. I have a name that gets spelled lots of different ways. I have to endlessly correct people writing down my email address, searching for my prescription at the chemist or my ticket at the box office. Makes you long for a straightforward name.

Nancy is a straightforward name but also gorgeous and sassy.

Betsy - too cutesy
Phoebe - you;ve used it already. Don't be weird!
I'm not keen on Violet but it is a classic name.
Ruby is OK bit a bit overused.

Carrieonmywaywardsun · 13/07/2022 09:04

Evelyn is too over done, and Annie is a little dated for me.
Love Phoebe but you shouldn't reuse it. My favourites are Ruby, Nancy and Violet.

SillyFruit · 13/07/2022 09:15

Love Violet. Why would you need to shorten it?

TidyDancer · 13/07/2022 09:20

Madeleine - this is personal preference of course, but I don't like your pronunciation. It's a beautiful name but if you're really stuck on that pronunciation then the alternative spelling might be better.

Annie - nice but prefer the formal Anna personally.

Phoebe - beautiful. But the middle name issue would be a sticking point for me I think. My best friend has her sisters middle name for first name and she's always been a bit iffy about it.

Violet - just lovely. Really beautiful name.

Evelyn - nice but you will struggle with your choice of pronunciation.

Nancy & Betsy - both nice but I share your concerns on them.

pinklavenders · 13/07/2022 09:53

madeleine (pronounced line not Lyn)

How does Leine become Line?!?

KirstenBlest · 13/07/2022 10:37

@SillyFruit , Love Violet. Why would you need to shorten it?

People are unlikely to say it as Vi-uh-let, they'll say Vilet (or Vi-luh depending on accent)

Most names usually get shortened, or if they are short, lengthened.

MiriMollyMartha · 13/07/2022 15:45

Annie or Phoebe

Titsflyingsouth · 13/07/2022 18:29

madeleine (the standard pronunciation is made-lyn. The kid will spend her entire life correcting all and sundry. Why make life that complicated?

Annie- Love it

phoebe - ok. But not my taste personally.

violet - lovely

Evelyn - ok

ruby - dislike

Nancy - like this. An under-used gem.

Betsy - loathe, loathe. Sounds infantile to me. Good for a pet not a human.

Annie is my fav from your list.

Fivebeanchilli · 13/07/2022 18:57

madeleine (pronounced line not Lyn) - I think you'd need to spell it Madeline. The -eine ending would never be pronounced that way.

annie (just Annie not Anna or anne) - nice
phoebe (only issue is this is dds 3 middle name but she doesn’t mind) - don't like
violet (I love Violet but dislike nn Vi which I think rules this out for us but it will be a middle name) - like this. I know a LOT and none of them are known as Vi
evelyn (pronounced ever-Lyn not eve-Lyn) - very popular. But nice enough
ruby - not keen
Nancy - lovely
Betsy - I like this

BirdsBirdsBird · 13/07/2022 19:04

How about Adeline? The ending will be pronounced the way you prefer, and it is a real name, but a bit more unusual.

I've never heard Madeleine pronounced made-lyn. It's usually Madd-uh-lin with the middle syllable barely there.

Purple52 · 18/07/2022 06:16

Anything where you are explaining the pronunciation is out for me! (Especially where it’s spelt the way you don’t want it said!)

you’ll spend FOREVERMORE (as will she) correcting people.

UseOfWeapons · 18/07/2022 07:03

Annie for me. Simple, strong, unlikely to get shortened or spelt incorrectly, a friendly, happy name.
Sorry OP, but the rest of your list is not striking a spark for me.

user1492757084 · 18/07/2022 10:21

Annie is my favourite.
It is sweet in all respects.
Second name Madeleine

Suggestions: Alanna, Fiona, Bessie, Tess
