What did you go for in the end?

There are many threads with Mums asking opinions or advice on their names and I always wonder what people chose in the end! Did you change your mind entirely because of the thread? Take a suggested name? What happened next?!??

You only want certain answers? You Should have added a caveat please only reply if you adhere to expected responses

OP wanted answers to the question posted - "If you asked for opinions on baby names here, what did you go for in the end?"

You obviously don't fit the criteria, as you've said there's no way you'd ask for that advice here. There was a caveat (the entire point of the post) and you ignored it.

You don't have to (and many fusspots would say you shouldn't) reply to a post when you buy your own admission cannot possibly contribute anything.

Zone2NorthLondon · 02/07/2022 22:33

No caveat was initially applied, retrospectively after my post the expectation were stated
My contribution is to offer that many may actively chose not to seek a mn opinion on names, as mn tends to have a particular preference regard names (usually safe mc names) and can be reactive to what’s perceived as odd , or out there names etc

When I was pregnant with DS (didn't know if he was a boy or girl) I asked for suggestions with girls names as DH and I could not agree on girls names. I mentioned our boy choice thinking it'd help with suggestions, instead it gained some unwelcome comments. I wasn't even asking opinions on it 🤣
He has that name, it suits him and we still love it.

Good for you, @SuperlativeOxymoron!

I asked for opinions on a name because I knew it could be used for a boy or a girl and I wanted to see where the consensus lay.

What I got was a load of bile and insults and one memorable individual (who has since name changed but I spy them - their writing style is quite distinctive!) decided to tell me that I clearly don’t understand and cannot speak the language that I have been fluent in since childhood.

I went for a different name and never again will I ask for an opinion on names from mumsnet!

Zone2NorthLondon · 02/07/2022 23:31

Mn name threads usually are a pile on snobbery meets misunderstanding of linguistics

TommyShelby · 02/07/2022 23:37

@Zone2NorthLondon and with a dash of racism/xenophobia for good measure! 😂

Zone2NorthLondon · 02/07/2022 23:52

@TommyShelby agreed mn name threads are a window on racism, xenophobia and class

I got some nasty comments as should be expected, and a few suggestions that were nice, but in the end the thread didn't really help me. I asked for suggestions of names with a number of criteria (must be international names, neither too short nor too long, etc). People made suggestions but I had already considered most of them and either discarded them or shortlisted them.

In the end I went for a name I had originally ruled out because a friend had used it, with a minot difference in spelling (mine is a common spelling in my own country, the spelling my friend used was a bit more unusual but only one letter difference).

I didn't ask about the middle name as the ones I had in mind were very foreign and I knew I'd get no help and lots of hate.

For DC3 (who hasn't been conceived yet) I already have a boy and girl's name shortlist with clear favourites. I won't post about them as I don't want nasty comments to put me off names I love ! Might post about the middle names I suppose.

SmileyPiuPiu · 03/07/2022 07:34

Not sure if it counts but I spotted a name I liked on someone else's thread and used that.

The caveat is literally in the title

12 years ago I asked for an opinion of a name for DD. It was completely torn to shreds, but we went for it anyway because it's gorgeous. It's still my favourite girls name and when I've thought of names for hypothetical daughters that I'll never have in the future, no name comes close to my DDs.
I see it offered as a suggestion on here all the time at the moment. People say how much they love it. It still gets the odd negative comment but nothing like what I got.

Primatrying · 03/07/2022 08:55

I asked on a different forum about middle names. The vote was pretty unanimous, and I agree that it flowed the best, but I just couldn't get excited about it.

In the end I went for a different, similar name that wasn't discussed on the thread which flowed better and still was a female version of the name of the man I was honouring. Think using Carlotta instead of Charlotte or Billie instead of Wilhelmina.

Merryclaire · 03/07/2022 10:21

I posted my shortlist as I thought it would be helpful to get opinions, but in the end it wasn’t really as everyone thinks differently and as many people prefer one name to another. However, it may help point out something negative you have perhaps overlooked.

I also like looking at other name ideas and have seen some ideas I wouldn’t have thought of otherwise.
