Errrr it's really not...

There is a variant used else that is pronounced in this way (I know a Dane and a Swede with the name) Joachim/Joakim

Why does his name have to be 'unique'? Every child is unique. It doesn't mean you have to saddle them with a name they have to constantly explain or spell just because his parents wanted to stand out.

I don't think any real children will be harmed in the making of this thread. Baby names is a known gateway.

There are several variations in the pronunciation and spelling. The Spanish pronounce it “Hwakeen” but spell it with an ‘n’ at the end, the Portuguese pronounce it with a soft j (and spell it with an ‘m’). DH also has a Scandinavian friend Joachim, pronounced like the saddowizca said. I’m guessing the actor pronounces it Hwakeen because his family lived in South America for a bit?

Cillian is pronounced Killian. It's a hard C.

I've never understood why the correct pronunciation makes this name better. Hey this is my new baby Cillian, We call him Killy for short and he can use Kill when he's older!!

Bleurgh.

Rant over.

And I don't think his famous name sake is good looking either, so there. All my controversial thoughts out for the day.

What about Balthazar @Littleraindrop15

Joaquim? Not to my taste but used by a distant relative. Pronounced Jo a kim…

I don't know if someone else has printed this out, but that is not how Joaquin it is 'wha - keen'

Knockoneofftheshelftowin · 27/06/2022 10:17

Call him Unique. The name always will be, even if it gets popular.

ErrolTheDragon · 27/06/2022 10:17

The pronunciation of Joachim has been pointed out a few times... not sure if anyone has explicitly said it's also a good idea to spell it correctly rather than ending in 'quim'!Grin

SaintHelena · 27/06/2022 10:28

Jace

wotsitsaremyfave · 27/06/2022 10:32

If you want unique, youll need to invent a new name

Otherwise you want something unusual/uncommon?

InnocentWarrier · 27/06/2022 10:58

You need to be careful with your quest for an unusual name given you and your DH can’t even pronounce Cillian correctly! Poor child could end up with a name you both have no idea how to say correctly @Littleraindrop15

A ‘unique’ spelling though 😄

ThisisMax · 27/06/2022 11:38

Cuan, an Irish name which is quite cool.

ThisisMax · 27/06/2022 11:38

Meant to say - pronounce - KU AN

There was a fantastic one on the thread about great-grandfathers’ names - Zerrubbabel

Unlikely to find another one of those in the class!

Oh wow

Here are the names are my list that were unranked in 2020 (that is that there were not three or more uses of them in England and Wales). I don't think all of them are usable, but with so little to go on for your taste - unique was the only factor I could match. I'd make sure to double check the popularity of any names which are suggested here if popularity is a concern to you. I've seen Luca suggested and that's the 25th most popular name and way too popular for me to consider. The Dark Greener website is a great resource if you are in England or Wales.
Algernon
Anselm
Artemas
Bart
Cassander
Castor
Digory
Epke
Etienne
Florizel
Jean-Baptiste
Loïc
Melchior
Mungo
Nemo
Odysseus
Pippin
Pollux
Theseus
Wulfric

A lot of these are names from different cultures and you will look pretty stupid if you use them and do not come from that culture.

I did preface that list with “I don't think all of them are usable, but with so little to go on for your taste - unique was the only factor I could match”.

How do you get that list? DS must be on the 2019 one

A few ways to look at the date for England and Wales. And a note that (unlike Scotland) England and Wales only release the names given to three or more babies in a given year. So there could have been two babies given each of the names on my list in 2020, but there’s no way to tell that.

ONS data sets for girls names - one file each year going back to 1996
ONS data set for boys names - one file each year going back to 1996
These are great for more granular data. They give a separate too hundred for England and Wales, popular names by location, maternal age.

Dark Greener website. This is my favourite way to view name popularity. It takes the ONS data and plots it on a graph so it’s easy to see how the name trends have changed year by year - great for catching rising trends, and far easier for a quick check than loading up the spreadsheet!

Dlabaddie · 27/06/2022 14:20

Oh yes sorry I've been on Dark Greener and it isn't there so assuming it's under 3

mathanxiety · 27/06/2022 16:46

@AWobABobBob - only about 3 or 4 of the listed names are not British.

The rest are either obscure older British names or come from cultures or literature from which the British have freely adopted names for centuries, Greek mythology for instance.

MrsMikeWazowski · 27/06/2022 17:57

Ulysses was on my list (we went for Thomas in the end 🤣🤣)
I also like Cyprian

Some gorgeous suggestions here 🥰

SleepingStandingUp · 27/06/2022 18:02

If a bloke said to me "Hi, I'm Cyprian" I'd think he came from Cyprus...

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 27/06/2022 18:12

I very seriously considered Isambard.
DH did not!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 27/06/2022 18:13
