Does anyone have sibling name envy?

I'm an only child so I've no experience of this but a friend was complaining that her parents gave her two sisters much nicer names than hers and she'd rather have one of their names. Her name is a rather different style to the others. I wondered if anyone else wishes that they'd been given the name that a sibling was given. Is this a thing?

Defo,my 4 older siblings were all named after my Grandparents so very classical names.
I was a bonus baby with 5 years between me and my sister.
I definitely drew the short straw.
I HATE my name,it's very old fashioned and growing up I always wanted to be called Lucy.
No one in their right mind would call a baby my name now.

My sisters both have very normal names, mine is slightly unusual and has some negative associations. It is also spelt in a different way and has left me spelling out my name constantly.

Dh always wanted his brother's middle name, growing up. I think he got the better middle name though. Now dh is an adult he prefers his own middle name, and we've given it to ds too.

Yeah, my sister has a slightly better name than mine. Mine is really boring.

obsessedwithsleep · 07/08/2022 18:18

I have 3 sisters and it's never occurred to me to be jealous of their names. This is literally the first time I've ever thought about it in my entire life. We just are who we are if you see what I mean!

IDidntWearASmileToday · 07/08/2022 18:32

My sister has a more common name (though still not super common) hers is more fluffy and girly, mine is a bit of a silly name in full but I quite like the shortening of it.

BestestBrownies · 07/08/2022 18:41

Absolutely yes. I have always hated my name as it's very old-fashioned. Both my younger siblings got beautiful names. Always pissed me off as I was born first so should've had first dibs on the good ones.

shreddednips · 07/08/2022 18:47

No, my parents couldn't have possibly picked two more equivalent names if they tried. They are both equally dull (but also equally inoffensive.) I think I ever so slightly prefer mine but only just, simply because my sister's was incredibly popular then and still is now. There were four girls in her class with the same name AND the same surname initial.

She was slightly luckier with her middle name than me though.

Blowyourowntrumpet · 07/08/2022 18:51

I'm a twin and my sister's name is much nicer than mine. Even my mum said she doesn't know what she was thinking🤣

tottyhot · 07/08/2022 18:53

My mum had really bad taste in names, although I got 2nd worst out of 3. My dh mum also had terrible choice of names, him and his siblings got old people names that have continued well into the realm of 'old' decades later, dh may as well be in his 80's according to his name. We are now a conjoined terrible name family. I think what we have our dc were nice but normal names that should outlive the 'top of the moment' names.

BIL also chose really bad names for his dc and we still cringe everytime we hear them and when I say to others the dc names they have on occasion burst out laughing oh dear.

Kindofcrunchy · 07/08/2022 18:53

It's so frustrating not knowing what all these names are 😂

Karmatime · 07/08/2022 18:57

My name was very popular in the 60s and not any more so it definitely puts me in the woman of a certain age bracket. My sister’s name is ageless and and still popular. I don’t hate my name but I’d prefer hers.

Imissmoominmama · 07/08/2022 18:59

I’ve always loved my name; my sister has always disliked hers. My brother’s name is really nice.

Blackcountryexile · 07/08/2022 19:03

I chose my sister's name and she has never complained. Mine's okay but I prefer hers!

SpaceJamtart · 07/08/2022 19:17

Never really thought about it but no, our names suit us and they are equally nice and inoffensive

My friend at school really got the short straw though her sister has a nice, well known, pretty name and she had the hyphenated family name of Hilda-Mildred which stood out in a bad way in our year group of Chloe, Amy, Jessica, Lily, Emily, Lauren etc
She definitely envied her sister for her nice normal name.

minuette1 · 07/08/2022 19:27

My dad was the only one of his siblings without a middle name. He was kind of bemused by that rather than envious!

Squashedraddish · 07/08/2022 19:32

Yes my sisters have much better names than me! Mine is dated and theirs are still used regularly today. I also got the worst middle names. Think a name like Gemma Deirdre Margaret and they got names like Hannah Charlotte and Isabella Emma

Mommabear20 · 07/08/2022 19:44

I don't envy my sisters name as it's equally as boring as mine, but I do prefer the name I almost got! If it hadn't been for the fact my cousin married a woman by that name whose a complete bitch, we'd have used it for DD.

DancingUnderTheLights · 09/08/2022 15:24

I like that my sister's name is less attached to specific decades so I'd like it for that. It also seems less common in our area. I do wish they'd used another name they were thinking of for me as it was much less common and nice.

SameToo · 09/08/2022 15:33

Nope. All our names have a similar ending but mine is the most unusual whilst theirs are very common so I like mine the best.

Crunchymum · 09/08/2022 17:08

Poor DP. He is a "Keith" in a sib-set of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John

(Not real names but they are all boys and he got a shit name compared to the rest)
