The name Liliana?

Bellacatt · 20/06/2022 19:09

Currently pregnant with dd1 and OH is less open minded with names than I am! We both like Liliana (pronounced Lily-Anna). My main problem is that our last name is Lewis and I've never been keen on alliterative names but this sounds ok to me? What do you think?

I also have always loved Annie as a nickname and prefer it to Lily. I feel like people would naturally shorten to Lily...but would it be odd to give the nickname Annie? Coming from the 'ana' part.

Thanks!

I would pronounce it "LilyARNA" I think Annie is lovely and would just use that

LittleBirdBlu · 20/06/2022 19:13

I love Liliana, but I pronounce it as Lily Ana not Lily Anna. If you want It pronounce Lily Anna I think it should be spelt Lilyanna or Lily-Anna ❤️

Gr33ngr33ngr4ss · 20/06/2022 19:14

Lily Lewis is a tongue twister. Lilliana to me is Lilli-arna so possibly you'll be correcting a lot. However like PP I fo like Annie! A lot!

SamMil · 20/06/2022 19:15

I know a Liliana (pronounced Lily-Arna) and it's a lovely name. She is Lily for short, but Annie is really nice too 😊i think people will naturally take your lead (and hers as she gets older!) so if you use Annie they will too.

MsTSwift · 20/06/2022 19:16

Just go for Annie. Lovely name. Lily’s are two a penny loads of them.

I'm just not a fan of the Arna pronunciation...sounds a bit posh to me! Maybe Lilianna could work?

I'm not a massive fan of nicknamey names on the birth certificate, that's all! Otherwise would just go with Annie. Not a fan of many other Ann- names either. Ahhhh, decisions!

Liliana is a bit too over the top for me personally. I also don’t think anyone else will shorten it to Annie - unless you always introduce her as Annie, in which case why not call her Annie?

Or there are lots of lovely Ann- names that would shorten to Annie
Annabel
Annelise
Annika
Aniela
Anais

minipie · 20/06/2022 19:20

Ahh cross posted!!

Nurseynoodles · 20/06/2022 19:20

Annie, as a stand-alone name has been around forever. Must better than Liliana in my opinion.

Thejoyfulstar · 20/06/2022 19:23

There is no 'r' in Liliana?

KirstenBlest · 20/06/2022 19:25

Annie is lovely, but I don't like Liliana.

Even if you spell it as Lilianna people will say Lily- Arna (non-rhotic r)

If you don't like nicknamey type names, why not put Ann or Anne on the BC.

I know a few Annies and only one is Annie, the others are Ann(e) and one has a long name starting with An (not Anastasia but along those lines)

toastofthetown · 20/06/2022 19:32

I'd pronounce it Lily-ah-na rather than Lily-Anna. I really don't like Liliana. It's so insipid and nothingy in a way that it almost seems like a parody of the frilly, liquid consonant girls names which are popular now. I think Lily would be far more intuitive than Annie as nickname so making Annie stick isn't a sure thing. There are other much nicer and more interesting names which shorten to Annie.

Rats21 · 20/06/2022 19:36

I know a couple of Lilianas. It’s pronounced Lily ar na. She will just be in with a lifetime of correcting people. I think Annie on its own as a name is fine! Just use that!

Agree with all this, but quite like the idea of it spelt and pronounced Lily-Anna, which also gives you Annie (though the likelihood is that she will end up Lily). Must confess I like an alliterative name, so Lily-Anna Lewis is the kind of thing I can't resist!

HuntingoftheSnark · 20/06/2022 19:41

I know a Liliana, pronounced Lily Anna. That's how her parents introduced her so as far as I'm concerned, that's how it's pronounced.

HumphreysCorner · 20/06/2022 19:50

Lilliana is lovely x

17caterpillars1mouse · 20/06/2022 19:56

I know two (one is 11 the other 6) though both use your spelling but pronounce it Lily-arna

Both are shortened to Lily

Squashedraddish · 20/06/2022 19:58

i would also say Liliarna. You could spell it Lilianna I think to get the pronunciation you want. I love Annie as a stand alone name- it’s not that common, it’s pretty and unfrilly.

other Annie names could be:
Anwen
Aneira
Anastasia
Anna
Annabel
Arianna
Arianwen
Anaya
anais
Annaliese
Anita

TwoBigNoisyBoys · 20/06/2022 20:06

@Bellacatt I think it’s absolutely beautiful 🥰 and it’s almost exactly what I was going to call DS2 had he been a girl. Annie for short is gorgeous 😁

SummerPuddings · 20/06/2022 20:33

Noel Fielding's Mrs.
I'd also pronounce it Lilli AH na.

CaptainCallisto · 20/06/2022 20:35

I know three Lillianas (15, 9 and 4) - all pronounced Lilly Anna. I've never heard anyone say it with the 'Arna' pronunciation! I'm in Yorkshire, so non-rhotic 'r' country. Might be a regional pronunciation thing...

Glad you said this. I'm Nottingham and I don't think anyone around here would pronounce it 'arna' either...except maybe my one southern friend?!

Luredbyapomegranate · 20/06/2022 20:55

I’d say it Lili-Anna, and I am in the South with a longer A accent. Arna is a scandi/ occasional US pronunciation, I don’t know why anyone would say it here.

However.. I think it’s very fussy and little-girly, TBH, even more when you add the alliteration of Lewis.

If you like Annie as a nn but want something longer as a full name what about Annalisa, Annabel, Susannah or Diana - or just Anna is nice too.

RuthW · 20/06/2022 21:59

You need two Ns for Lillianna

Lilliana is Lilly-arna.
