Baby girl names - Edie or Mae?

Lealu · 19/06/2022 21:11

So we are finding choosing a name far harder than I’d imagined! We agree we want a fairly unusual name. We live in England but I’m Spanish so the name needs to work for bilingual daughter. Any thoughts or associations or preferences out of:
Mae
Edie
Alba
(pronounced phonetically, not like in Gaelic)
Thank you! 😊

We can see this thread is quite old now but if you’ve landed here looking for baby naming inspo, our recently updated 1000 top girl names article may offer some ideas. Flowers

Never seen a thread where I have loved all of them before! Though (nit picking) Edith nickname Edie x

Mumofgirls2017 · 19/06/2022 21:55

Edie!

toastofthetown · 19/06/2022 22:03

Alba by quite some way. Edie is twee and the whole -ie nickname trend is done to death and so dull for me. I don't like the spelling Mae or the name May, though I have to concede it's better as a first name than a middle name.

blameitonthecaffeine · 19/06/2022 22:13

I love Alba. Edie is very sweet but I'd use it as a nn for Edith. Not keen on Mae as a first name.

Alba Mae or Edith (Edie) Mae would work well?

AliBaliBears · 19/06/2022 22:21

I like Alba

May is ok, not keen on Mae spelling

Edie as a nickname for Edith is ok but it doesn't seem like a substantial name in its own right to me if that makes sense!

SnowdropFox · 19/06/2022 23:15

Edie, is lovely. I know a 5 yo one and she is the sweetest.

I'm Scottish so Alba would be a no for me for a person.

Mae is pretty but just a bit meh for me. Know too many who have used it as a mn or hyphens first name. Kirsty-Mae, Lila-Mae sort of thing.

Savoretti · 19/06/2022 23:17

I live in SEast and they are all very popular names. You said you wanted something unusual?

ReadingIsFundamental · 19/06/2022 23:18

I would’ve used Eddie if I’d had a girl second time round so it’d definitely be my choice. All are lovely, though.

DramaAlpaca · 19/06/2022 23:22

Edie is nice.

Mae is nicer spelled May.

Alba is a very unattractive sound to me.

Luredbyapomegranate · 19/06/2022 23:24

Alba

Edith nn Edie is nice, but lots of them. Edie as a full name is a bit babyish.

May is nice. Mae I always think is a bit stripper, not that that’s necs a bad thing (Mae West etc) but perhaps best not to impose it. It’s traditionally a nn for Mary, so you could use it short for Maria, if you want a Spanish flavour.

I would go for Edith as people will make the assumption that this is your DD's name and because it sounds more substantial. Obvs it's sound makes it sound very popular in line with all the ee names but that isn't a problem unless you want it to be and Edith is a bit cooler and heading towards the up and coming plainer name trend.
I'm not a fan of the name Mae particularly with that spelling but can see that it is quite an easy name to deal with and very much has an early 20C vibe if that is your thing.
I'm not sure about the politics behind Alba so wouldn't pick it .if I were to choose it I would probably go the whole hog with Gaelic spelling and pronunciation.

milkmilkeverywhere · 20/06/2022 00:42

Mae is chavvy.

Edie is ok but about a squillion kids are called Evie so it will get mixed up. Edith is better.

Alba is lovely and not common (although sounds a lot like other popular names).

SunflowerGardens · 20/06/2022 00:43

May spelt properly would actually be unusual.

HeadlessGummyBears · 20/06/2022 04:02

I think Alba sounds lovely.

Some other suggestions:
Celia
Eliana
Esmeralda
Frida
Gabriela
Liliana
Marcia
Maria
Paloma
Ramona
Rosa
Reina
Sophia/Sofia
Selena

Rekorderlig88 · 20/06/2022 06:35

I love Edie

Kanaloa · 20/06/2022 06:40

I would choose Alba, it’s really nice. I like Edie if it’s short for something, but it seems a bit nothingy by itself. I also like Eden. I’m not keen on Mae. To me ‘Mae’ is just a sound that comes after Gracie/Evie/Lilly. I’ve known too many of them!

20viona · 20/06/2022 06:47

Alba by far. Edie is a wet lettuce name IMO and Mae is a middle name.

moomoogalicious · 20/06/2022 07:28

No need for edith, just use edie if you like the name. I know a 20 year old edie and she is an amazing, strong woman. Certainly no wet lettuce!

Another edie uses the nn Ed.

KirstenBlest · 20/06/2022 08:07

Alba.
Mae is awful, Edie is nothingy and it wouldn't be obvious how to say it if you were Spanish, and it is twee and the Evie type names have een overused

ChagSameachDoreen · 20/06/2022 09:37

Alba.

Cross Mae off your list completely. It's massively overused. The Jane/Louise of today.

Edie is twee.
