This is a very controversial opinion especially in the Uk but I prefer the modern “made up” names like Paisley, Braylee over the classics like Olivia, Lily, Edith ect.

I can't stand old people names.

The amount of Ernie's and Enid's and Dorothy's around here is dreadful.

IstayedForTheFeminism · 17/06/2022 17:00

If you want to call your child a nickname/diminutive* then put that on their BC. They don't need a "full proper" name.

  • I mean things like Sam not Samuel, Jamie not James. I'm not advocating for calling them "bean" on their BC.
20viona · 17/06/2022 17:00

I kind of agree. I absolutely detest names like Olivia, Emily, Evie, Ava, Elsie, Edith etc

I like names like Rayna, Lana, Maeva and Avie.

My husband thinks I'm mad haha.

Greensleeves · 17/06/2022 17:02

Margot is a foul, ugly word. Ottilie is stupid, unless you're German and pronounce it properly.

I also think Eileen is beautiful and would have used it if I'd had a girl.

TeacupDrama · 17/06/2022 17:07

I'm the opposite I prefer normal names for your culture not necessarily common ones; spelt the normal way or one of the known variants I don't mind if Catherine is spelt with a K or a C or if it is Kathryn but not Kathereen, or Stewart / Stuart; I don't really like surnames as first names either, on the other hand I avoided top twenty names

Cetrion · 17/06/2022 17:08

Just because a name isn't commonly used by white Brits doesn't mean that it's made up, pretentious etc

This unfortunately seems to be an unpopular opinion on this site. My family is mixed French and Scottish and when I suggested some names that weren't typical english I was essentially told that I sounded pretentious and 'why can't you just pick a nice, simple name like Claire or Sarah'....

HellyR · 17/06/2022 17:10

I can't stand Reuben.
Also OP it's "etc", short for "et cetera" - not "ect", short for "ectoplasm".

Oh come on @Greensleeves

… I’ll get my coat.

Jsummers16 · 17/06/2022 17:15

Another unpopular opinion of mine is that it dosent matter if a name will “date”, which is all people seem to say on here. All names date unless it’s a name that was always in the top 100 like Elizabeth. It dosent really make sense for people to say that either because the same people like the old names that have only recently came back around. Names that are dated now will be stylish again in 10 years

I hate so called ‘vintage’ names like Agatha, Agnes, Dorothy, Enid and Ivy. So ugly.

I’m so overly bored of Rose/Grace/May as middle names.

TabithaTittlemouse · 17/06/2022 17:20

Olivia, Lily, Edith and Electroconvulsive therapy?

I’m with you on that last one. It’s electrifying!

Jsummers16 · 17/06/2022 17:22

Why the rude comment. What have I ever done to you? Sorry spelling police I got the t and the c the wrong way round

OP posts:
Blue4YOU · 17/06/2022 17:24

I agree that Ottilie isn’t a nice sound as it sounds like “utterly “ (just my opinion).
I love older names but not necessarily old lady names like Agnes, Dorothy…
But I love an extravagant name like Thomasina, Lisette, Wilhelmina, Emmeline.
In reality I had a Grace and have a Lydia (but Lydia has two other old names from her grandmothers that I wouldn’t choose for other than middle names.
I also love names like Lana but not the Brittany/Chelsea/Brie/Savannah names..

GreatCuppa · 17/06/2022 17:33

Names like Tilly/Millie/Ella are just so blah.

HellyR · 17/06/2022 17:35

If that was meant for me, it wasn't intended to be rude. Thought it might help you avoid spelling a three-letter abbreviation incorrectly in future, but if you already knew and it was a typo then no worries and sorry! I make plenty of typos myself. It was intended to be friendly, hence I used the jokey term 'ect like ectoplasm'. It was momentarily confusing to me in your OP as I thought you were saying 'ect' was a name.

Cetrion · 17/06/2022 17:37

I'm prepared to get a lot of shit for this but I honestly think that names that are really common and overdone are just as bad as 'UnIqUe' names. A nice middle ground is always better to me.

It's always the people who go with the 'classics' that get all snobby about names but really? You might think Kayden, Demi-Rose and Nevaeh are chavvy, scummy etc but that doesn't change the fact that Olivia, Elizabeth and Sarah are obnoxiously dull names given by dull people to inevitably dull children.

Orphlids · 17/06/2022 17:38

I tend to like the names that often get referred to on here as ‘stripper names’. I’d quite like to have a sexy stripper name! 😀

Ablackcat · 17/06/2022 17:40

Have to say, as much as I dislike the ‘chav’ comments on here this

Olivia, Elizabeth and Sarah are obnoxiously dull names given by dull people to inevitably dull children

is pretty hideous. I don’t have a child with one of these names, though probably the ‘boy’ equivalent, but as boring as his name is he won’t grow up loathing his name as I did mine.

SirChenjins · 17/06/2022 17:40

That names don't make you or your children interesting or boring - you/they do that all be your/themselves.

Orphlids · 17/06/2022 17:44

Oh, I also enjoy it when people give their children names that reflect their own interests or passions. Always get people on here saying you shouldn’t do that.

Moonface123 · 17/06/2022 17:46

l cannot believe the amount of fuss on here re choosing a name. Nobody really cares what you call your child, what middle name, or god forbid should it go with siblings name. Its your choice so just go with something you like, took me literally two seconds to name both of mine ,felt no need to ask others opinions, trusted my own choices and no regrets.

TopCatsTopHat · 17/06/2022 17:46

I really dislike 2 syllable names that end in an 'ey' sound. So rhymes with any of these, and similar - itsy bitsy teeny weeny...
Unfortunately that includes quite a lot of popular names. There is no logic to this dislike and I think I just grew an aversion because there was a phase around early 00's when it seemed that's all anyone chose. Ruby, Poppy, Chloe, Kitty, etc etc. I have to keep this opinion very hush hush as you can imagine I would isolate and offend almost everyone I knew if I mentioned it, it's been quite a relief to get it off my chest to be honest. It's a dirty secret, I'm not proud of it. 😂😂

SinnermanGirl · 17/06/2022 17:50

My unpopular opinion is that scorning other people’s choice of name is extremely rude.

BreadInCaptivity · 17/06/2022 17:57

Generally I'm an each to their own kind of person, but if you want opinions on a proposed name on here then don't be surprised when you get ones you don't like.

I don't have an issue with unusual names per se but I do think some parents get fixated by names that might sound great for a 2 year old but embarrassing for a 40 year old and I will admit I find "family themed" names (where every child's name has he same starting letter or has some reference to media culture - such as characters from the same book/film) a bit odd in that the "theme" is more important than the name itself - eg you've got a Harry and Hermione so the next poor buggers get stuck with Ron/Draco (names you wouldn't have considered otherwise).

SirenSays · 17/06/2022 18:04

Pensioner names are dreadful but everyone here seems to love them.
