We would like a Spanish first name to go with the middle name Alexander (we are a Spanish/English couple). After much whittling down our top three are:
Tiago
Rodrigo (we would use Rodri for day to day)
Diego
Would be interested to know what you think of them. Thank you 😊

Tiago is my favourite

my kids have Spanish names too, Rafael and Gabriel

We also considered Manu

AdInfinitum12 · 17/06/2022 12:06

I like Tiago but as a Spanish/English couple I'd be wary of nicknames. I could see it being shortened in the UK to Tia which could then sound funny if he chooses to go by that nickname in front of any Spanish family.

Love Tiago!

Rodrigo

Works the best in English, nice nn. The others translate less easily

I think of the three my preference would be Diego.

Rodrigo needs the rolled 'r' for me, and Tiago sounds a bit 'cutesy' with my English ears on (although not at all in Spanish).

I've always loved Tiago (used to live in Portugal)

Mumofgirls2017 · 18/06/2022 07:32

I really like them all. Probably Rodrigo best!

bluechameleon · 18/06/2022 07:58

I love Tiago and I don't think it will be shortened to Tia as that is usually a girl's name. I teach a lovely Thiago and have always thought how nice his name is.

ChairPose9to5 · 18/06/2022 08:01

If it's a middle name, I'd use Santiago in full. If not, use Diego. Santi is a cuter nn for Santiago i think.

Rodrigo, I'm not sure about that one.

minuette1 · 18/06/2022 08:13

Tiago is a great name. I work with one and he is never shortened to Tia - that would be weird. What people do sometimes call him as a nick name is 'T'

newbiename · 18/06/2022 08:27

Love Tiago

Bambaleyo · 18/06/2022 23:38

Tiago 100%

MrsOwainGlyndŵr · 18/06/2022 23:42

Isn't Manu short for Emanuel?

RevoltingHumanHead · 19/06/2022 02:01

Tiago appeals most to me. Rodrigo and Diego seem a bit more generic. No offence meant.

Darnoot1 · 19/06/2022 02:39

Tiago. (Also agree that Santiago is even better!)

I think Rodrigo without a proper Spanish accent doesn't sound brilliant. Although a lovely name. **

mackthepony · 19/06/2022 02:42

Thiago

Might get shortened to Tig?

MrsOwainGlyndŵr · 19/06/2022 10:29

I know Santiago is a bona fide name in Spain, but it's a bit religious IMO if you're not. It would be like calling him Saint James in English!

Louise0701 · 19/06/2022 10:31

Tiago is my favourite. We have Spanish friends whose son is called Tiago and he’s never had nicknames at school except T. He is sometimes just T to his parents and siblings too.

SiobhanSharpe · 19/06/2022 10:38

I think Rodrigo is best -- both the full name and the nickname sound very good in English. (And presumably in Spanish too!)
I'd be wary about Tiago because if it's shortened to Tia it sounds quite feminine. This may not be a problem for some but it could be for others.

Ticksallboxes · 19/06/2022 10:44

I love Tiago!
