Hello! Would very much appreciate hearing thoughts on DH and I's picks for our first daughter. Any ratings and opinions would be great!

Leonora - Very slightly my current fav right now. Also love Nora as nn

Rosalie - Love this. Only downside for me is Rose as nn since its just so common right now but it's not massively bothering me.

Severine - DH suggestion that we both love. We worry that she might stand out a bit with a French name being raised in Scotland? (Dh is french, I am scottish)

Circe - A weirder one but both really like it!

I'm also open to any suggestions based on the names mentioned. Thanks in advance!

Leonora - beautiful name and my favourite of yours by far. I also love Nora but think Leo would be an adorable NN on a little girl and pretty cool on a teenager / young woman

Rosalie - I'm not a fan. I loved it as a teen when I read twilight and thought it was pronounced Roz-uh-lie. I was truly gutted when the movie came out and I learnt it was like Rosalee

Severine - I'm not a fan. Sever doesn't produce great imagery and I see it's not really pronounced that way but still. Debbie would make a cute but unusual NN though. I kinda see it as the name of an elegant female husky rather than a child

Circe - not a fan, I really had no idea how to say it. Maybe it's a grower though

Good luck with whichever name you choose

Housenoob · 16/06/2022 17:34

Love Rosalie

Leonora is really nice but slightly prefer Leonie

Severine is nice to hear but written down it makes me think of a severed hand or Severus Snape

Circe is a bit too Game of Thrones and also she will be forever correcting people's pronunciations and having to explain that her name isn't Circle.

@Kanaloa I mean lots of people on this thread have said the don't like some of or all the names I've picked and that's fine.

But I do think it's a bit suspect to say that they're all pretentious (all of them but one not being english speaking names commonly) and then going ahead to suggest common British names..

If an Irish couple came on here and said "We love the names Caoihme, Aodh and Siobhon" and someone said "They all sound pretentious/made up etc you should call them Sharon or Elizabeth instead" idk I do think that's a bit off?

Maybe I'm overreacting? I do see on here all the time though people saying names are weird, pretentious, made up etc just because they haven't heard of it 😕

Oh I see. I hadn’t seen that post suggesting Sarah/Rachel etc, I suspect that may be what the pp was responding to! Yeah, that isn’t great. I actually do like a lot of French names, just the ‘severe’ sound puts me off. Makes me think of a really strict teacher in an old novel or something! Miss Séverine, the super strict maths teacher.

Hazelnuttree · 16/06/2022 19:26

Leonora - Quite like it, but I think Norah is absolutely beautiful. Also love Nina and Eleonora.

Rosalie - Pretty, like Rose and Rosa too. Sylvie / Sylvia are similar and also lovely.

Severine - awful, reminds me of the word 'severed', as in 'severed hand'

Circe - not keen, reminds me of the GoT character

KayEmAy · 16/06/2022 19:49

Leonora - It doesn't make sense but, while I like both Leo and Nora, I am not a fan of them together lol I love Nora on her own or Cleo/Leonie with the nn Leo

Rosalie - beautiful but think you're right about it being really common, think it's a stunning middle name though!

Severine - love, and nothing wrong with standing out :) My Mom is foreign and gave me a more American name (where I grew up), which I understood but I always wished I had a cool foreign one from her list! lol

Circe - my favorite on your list - just super cool

Other ideas based on your list -

Bellamy nn Bell
Kira
Josette nn Josie, Jo, Jojo
Inez
Camille/Camila nn Cami or Millie
Baye
Cosette
Gigi (Gia/Gemma/Genevieve)
Roxane love the nn Roxie
Noa (love the way Noa Rosalie sounds!)
Perri
Sacha
Tali (on it's own or for Natalia)
Veronica nn Ronnie if she wants

Tryagain2020 · 16/06/2022 20:01

I like Leonora.
I like Severine but I admit it does make me think of Severus Snape. But I like him too, so.
I find Rosalie dull. I know too many Rosies.
I dislike Circe because I always want to pronounce it Sir-kee (because of how Circle is pronounced). Which I suppose is a horrible hybrid of the real English and Greek pronounciations. I know that's wrong, but I have to force myself to see it another way.

We have similar taste. Great names!

Gigi in particular I love. Dh vetoed it early on though cause he said it suited a child but not an adult. Still really like it but I kinda his point

Gigi could be short for other names though. So Gigi when she’s little and Gianna/Georgina etc when she’s bigger. If you still liked it!

33goingon64 · 16/06/2022 22:14

What about Segolene? Seg-oh-len. My favourite French name! Or Manon? What about Seren?

I quite like Giovanna for a bit but ultimately I just love really gigi on its own. But I do get dhs point about it maybe being a bit juvenile for an adult

I do really like Seren! I'm sure DH brought it up as middle name potential not too long ago

Aurelia, Evangeline or Seraphina 😊

SammyScrounge · 17/06/2022 00:33

Rosalie is very pretty. Short form 'Rosie' is lovely too.

Severine is different but not outlandish. It has a classy feel to it.

Mumofgirls2017 · 17/06/2022 08:20

I like Rosalie

Confusion101 · 17/06/2022 08:33

I wouldn't have known how to pronounce Severine or Circe until I saw your post. I'm a teacher and the amount of kids that just let me go on mispronouncing their names is huge, for months. So might be an issue. Love Rosalie but Rosie has become very popular. My fave on your list would be Circe now that I know how to say it! Nice to see different names. 😀

Cetrion · 17/06/2022 09:39

Thanks everyone for the thoughts and suggestions! Definitely narrowed down to just Leonora, Rosalie and Severine now and will probably just wait the four days to see which one suits her! Any more thoughts still welcome though 🙂

Now onward to middle name potentials 😂

OP posts:
Kanaloa · 17/06/2022 10:25

You could double up for middle names. Leonora Séverine has a nice ring.

chesirecat99 · 17/06/2022 11:32

If you like Gigi, I know a Gabrielle and a Gabriella who both use it as a nickname. They are both lovely names.

soulinablackberrypie · 19/06/2022 16:53

I love Leonora but I don't really like Nora. If you do like it and don't mind it being used for short, then this would probably be a good choice for you.

I like Rosalie a lot too. (I was just talking about this on another thread - was that you too?)

Severine is rather pretty, unusual but not hard to say or spell. But am I right in thinking there's some kind of cake or pudding with a rather similar name? I know someone who really wanted to use Seraphine, which is quite similar in style.

Circe is not really my style.

Another French name I really like is Amandine, but I'm not sure how well it would work in England or Scotland, as people would probably just want to pronounce it like Amanda - am-AND-een. I think it should really be am-ond-EEN, am I right?

Sjpoppy · 26/09/2022 13:42

Leonora is a beautiful name x

MothsAndWaspsAreUsefulPollinators · 26/09/2022 15:01

Either of the first two IMO.

Rosalie is a relatively short sounding 3-syllable name that trips off the tongue so as parents you don't need to shorten it to Rose if you don't want to (her friends or she herself will shorten it to Rose, Rosa, Rosie, Alie, or something unrelated). Agree that Nora is probably needed for Leonora somehow. All these are good names. I prefer (Leo)nora as I like 'strong' sounding names.

I'd avoid Severine as it doesn't really sound good when Anglicised, and the word sever isn't a nice one. Also, Severus (Snape). Good book character but not a good association really.

Circe has been covered elsewhere in a thread recently. Avoid, I think.

This might interest you, OP.

The name Leonora or Léonora was given to 25 girls in France in 2021.

Rosalie was used 211 times.

Severine was used less than 3 times, possibly not at all.
