Hello,

So it looks like itโ€™s down to these two for baby #5.๐Ÿ˜…

DH likes Isolde and I like Eleanor. What are your thoughts?

Our other children are:

Josephine, Iris, Theodore and Charlotte.

Thank you for your help. ๐Ÿ˜Š

Isolde - Eleanor is nice if it's pronounced ell-en-or but everyone where I live says it ell-uh-nuh which is much less nice, IMHO. I didn't even know the "proper" way to say it until I was about 18. Also she will be nicknamed Ellie which is a bit blah and easy to nickname smelly Ellie, big belly ellie, etc.

El-uh-nor is US, El-uh-nah is UK

Eleanor. Isolde has too many possibilities (I know one pronounced Is-older, one pronounced Is-old and one who is I-solder).

Ooo I like both
I would worry the beautiful Eleanor would just become another Ellie though so I would go with Isolde

But wouldnโ€™t Isolde become just another Izzy?

I like both but Iโ€™ve always thought Eleanor is a very graceful, timeless name. Never met an Isolde.

SquigglePigs · 16/06/2022 21:41

I love Eleanor. Honestly not sure how to pronounce Isolde and she's likely to have people mispronounce it her whole life (I have a name like that - it's a minor irritation rather than a major one but it's worth considering).

Penguinsaregreat · 16/06/2022 21:42

Eleanor is lovely.

pilates · 16/06/2022 21:44

Eleanor is beautiful but dislike Ellie

ScottishStar · 16/06/2022 21:49

Isolde! Your other childrenโ€™s names are not as common as Eleanor is so I would go for a name that is a bit unusual too.

Ooh not sure about that, there was a huge debate on here a little while ago where people disagreed
and the ell-en-or I knew was the most upper middle class, English person I've ever met.

This supports ell-en-NOR as the English pronunciation too m.youtube.com/watch?v=u2MB10ZsRm0

Ravenclawdropout · 16/06/2022 21:57

Ok here is the pronunciation of Isolde. I like it very much but think it doesn't go as well with the very straightforward names of the siblings which everyone knows how to pronounce and are not as unusual. So for that reason I would go with Eleanor.

SleeplessWB · 16/06/2022 22:18

I disagree that Eleanor is really popular. It has not been in the top 50 in a long time. I have an Eleanor and there isn't another one in her school. She is also never called Ellie or Ella as she doesn't like them so you can easily stick to the full name if you prefer.

Butterbeer4All · 16/06/2022 22:21

Eleanor

Ellmau · 17/06/2022 00:32

Eleanor's all right but a bit plain.

I like Isolde.

badg3r · 17/06/2022 00:34

Isolde and Iris are a bit similar.

Ravenclawdropout · 17/06/2022 02:29

That's true about Iris and Isolde being similar, so another vote for Eleanor.

DurdleSnore · 17/06/2022 11:31

If this was your first baby Iโ€™d say Isolde as I do love that name but I think Eleanor works best with your other children.

Basilbrushgotfat · 17/06/2022 14:48

I don't think Iris and isolde and too similar at all! Definitely preferring Isolde

Theoldwoman · 17/06/2022 14:55

Eleanor. I donโ€™t even know how to pronounce the other one.

cptartapp · 17/06/2022 15:22

Eleanor. In its entirety.

RevoltingHumanHead · 17/06/2022 15:23

I really don't like Eleanor. So Isolde. But like a pp I prefer Iseult.

IrisVersicolor · 17/06/2022 20:53

jossysgiant · 16/06/2022 15:14

Iseult is my favourite spelling but Isolde is preferable to Eleanor

+1

SpaceJamtart · 17/06/2022 21:02

Eleanor, its a lovely name

Ive never heard the other one be said and would guess "Is Old" as pronounciation which isnt great

Marynotsocontrary · 18/06/2022 15:11

El-uh-nor is US, El-uh-nah is UK

No, the r is pronounced in parts of the UK too.

Chewbecca · 18/06/2022 15:15

Eleanor as I can neither spell or pronounce the other name & it would drive me nuts.

I think Juliette and Beatrice would go well with your brood.

BlackLambAndGreyFalcon · 19/06/2022 19:31

Isolde - as long as pronounced correctly with 3 syllables!

Isolde - as long as pronounced correctly with 3 syllables!

Depends on the country, French is 2 syllables, German is 3. Itโ€™s a Celtic name so neither is more correct than the other.
