Help from Irish speakers please

Hello
I’m thinking of using an Irish name, possibly in the middle spot this time around. Obviously it will depend on which first name we choose. One girls name I’m considering is Fiadh. I’m aware how popular it is at the minute in Ireland. I just wanted to confirm with any Irish speakers please if a fada is required above the I? I’ve seen it mostly without but a few times with (mostly with the Fia spelling). I know special characters often get missed off anyway but I’d at least like to spell it correctly on the bc if possible. Many thanks.

No fada required!

Both are used but without fada is far more popular here in Ireland (I just had a quick look on the CSO site and there were 424 Fiadhs and 86 Fíadhs born last year).

Go with whichever you prefer!

No fada needed as the letters ia make an ee sound anyway. Eg. grian, liathróid, iarraidh, Liam, bliana etc. etc.

If I saw Fíadh I'd do a very mild inward tut.

No fada.

Round my way you fall over Fiadh/Fias, there are so many of them. I don't know any that have a fada. Gorgeous name, it's no surprise it's popular.

mineallmine · 10/06/2022 23:22

Definitely no fada, would be wrong. As a pp said the ia makes the í sound. I only know one and I teach in an all girls school. Maybe they haven't hit primary school yet. It's a gorgeous name.

How do you pronounce it? Just interested to know!

The more I think about Fiadh the more I like it. Might add it to my first name girls list.

No fada! Hate when people add in fadas where they're not required.

mathanxiety · 12/06/2022 05:27

No fada.

The IA vowel combo is always pronounced with long EE and short A already, so not necessary.

If I saw Fíadh I'd do a very mild inward tut.
Same here.
